I haven't seen much on these but seems like a good idea for hitting under trees, trail management near the deer stands, and even some yaupon mitigation.

I'm thinking it would be a nice attachment for my skid steer (I'm in Brazos and Robertson counties). Being that a full drum mulcher would be overkill for my 75hp skidsteer and I'm more doing the smaller stuff.

Any experience out there?

Check this out. Good comparison between flail & rotary. https://www.becksidemachinery.co.uk/post/flail-mowers-vs-rotary-mowers#:~:text=Flail%20cutters%2C%20however%2C%20have%20wider,of%20equipment%20will%20move%20slower.

Here's another good article on comparison of a bush hog vs flail.
I thought I could benefit from a flail mower a year or so ago as I have 7-8 acres that surrounds my "yard around the house" of 2-3 acres. I have both bush hogged it and zero turn mowed it. I like the finished look of it when I zero turn mowed it ….but it's time consuming and puts a lot of time on my zero turn….. so I have also bush hogged it with my small tractor, but it doesn't look as good.
So I thought maybe a flail mower would work, as then I could use it in the pastures as well. (More uses than a tractor mounted finish mower, I thought).
I decided to rent one and try it before shelling out the cash for one. Here is my evaluation on the flail vs bush hog (rotary cutter).
1.) It definitely produces a better finished cut than the bush hog but not as nice as my zero turn.
2.). It requires much more maintenance than the bush hog due to the belt drives and all the blades….especially if you hit rocks and stuff with it.
3.) It won't adjust in cutting height as much as a bush hog……as far as raising it up. I bush hog my grazing pastures to keep them in the 6" - 8" height range to promote maximum growth. The flail mower won't cut that high.
4.). The flail mower I rented had an hydraulic offset capability and that was nice cutting around the barns and down fences and drainage ditches…. you don't have that ability with a regular bush hog.

I ended up not buying the flail mower as I found that I used my bat wing and my 7' bush hog for more uses than the flail mower.
I am going to rent a finish mower attachment this spring just to mow the 7-8 acres once… to evaluate if it might work better with less cost and maintenance than the flail mower……..give a nicer finished look……and keep me from having to use my zero turn as much.
That's about all I can add. I guess it just depends what uses the flail mower can be per personal preference.
Here is that other article. Take care my friend.

Thanks - that makes sense. I'm going to check the rental availability. The Good Works Tractor guy has some great videos!
