Guns - why keep them?

I have some guns that I find myself keeping simply because I like them and at times take them out and look at them. Wipe them down etc. Trouble is, I very seldom shoot them and the prospects of me shooting them appear quite small anytime in the foreseeable future.

What I have on the list is the following:
Browning Maxus 12ga 3" in excellent condition
Tikka .30-06 (stainless with black stock)
Sig 716 DMR AR-10
Arsenal SLR-101S in 7.62x39 (milled)
Savage with thumb hole stock 22 WMR
Marlin 30-30 stainless with JM stamp
Marlin 60 in stainless
Kimber Ultra CDP 2 1911
Colt 1911 Commander XSE stainless
Dan Wesson 1911 stainless full size
Daniel Defense AR-15

I have many shotguns and that is what I shoot most these days on bird hunting trips. All of my guns are in excellent condition or in like-new condition.

I have a Beretta 1301 that I purchased because I like the gun, but wondering when will I ever shoot it. How long do you guys keep a gun unused before you dump it?

Only ever sold guns twice and regretted both times later. My go to decision is do I need a bigger gun safe?

I don't sell guns (except one time, in a rare situation) but I like buying them. So post some prices you want for those in your list.

Understood.

I'm contemplating selling the aforementioned so if there's a way to list them without listing them, I'm all ears.

Because they are cool and we don't have as much equity in them as we think do.

I will say this though with regard to your 1301. I waited over a feeder with mine until a bunch of hogs came out (iluminated with a green light at night) and wore them out with it. 2 Confirmed dead, 1-2 more that probably have a sore backside.

The OB has a running gun buying/selling/ trading thread.
Put one or two at a time on there with detailed pictures and your price.
Or get a table at your local gun show and sell them as your private collection.

You're probably right, but I'd argue there's probably a good chunk of equity in my AK. Don't believe the arsenal can be purchased new anymore but I could be wrong.

Only reason I sell my guns is to make or buy something better. Quality over quantity.

Regarding your post - I have not gotten to the point where I need to offload guns but am about 2-3 long guns away from having to get a 3rd safe and I will probably offload before I get another safe.

Never understood the "I don't sell guns" guys. What I hear is they obviously don't buy enough then. Trim the fat every once in a while and use the proceeds for something youd rather have.

Once I acquire a firearm, I don't get rid of it. I just buy more space which means I the have more room for more guns. I treat them like anything else I collect. I like them. They make me happy. I keep them safe and protected. It doesn't matter if you don't shoot them. I get them because I like them.

I have never purchased a gun I didn't want. I don't buy junk. So I don't ever need to "trim fat" or "upgrade".

Every few months, I focus on one firearm or caliber I want or don't have. Then I spend time locating it or hunting it down. That's what I enjoy

Or people have bad experiences with their guns....

I sold a gun once. Now I don't have it anymore. I won't make that mistake again. I do have a list of guns I need to buy.

I'd be interested in the .30-30 and the 1911s.

They're objects. Dont let them take too much real estate in your head or heart.

If I never sold a gun, I wouldnt have half the stuff I do now.

Worth considering how easy a specific gun would be to replace before you sell given our idiotic import laws, but beyond that, sell it if you don't use it and don't like it, and buy stuff you will use.

Dont let possessions own you.

I'm with you on this one. I'm not a collector, and don't have anything special. Guns are a utility for me- they have to serve a purpose (actual, not just some random scenario I envision in my head to justify a want). That's mostly because I can't afford to just buy things because I think it's cool, so I have to be selective. I have no problem selling a gun, even though I rarely do. That's just because I rarely have an extra gun. It's usual to fund a different purchase. Of course, inherited pieces will be different, I think.

I've always had the "beware of the man with 1 gun" mentality, if you know what I mean. Take shotguns for instance, over the decades I've rarely found someone that can outshoot me even though I still tote around a 30 year old Benelli Nova Pump. And when someone does, it ain't because they have a $2500 gun, it's because they put in the time and could crush it with any gun.

I won't advise you to sell any guns if you don't want to, but I would advise that you sell the peloton.

100%! They are tools, nothing more.

If I do not see a use for a specific tool or gun, get rid of it to fund a new tool or gun.

I kinda got four categories. 1.) Old historic firearms I collect… 1800's -1900's Longarms and hand guns. I have lots of fun meeting people who are walking history books of old firearms and enjoy hearing their stories and learning from them. I buy the best example I can afford at the time and then have fun trading and selling/buying to upgrade each example. I enjoy doing research and learning all the history and details of those firearms.
2.) Firearms with personal family or friends special sentimental value. I don't and won't sell those.
3.) Wheel guns - 50's to 80's Vintage Colts & Smiths. I enjoy collecting certain models and barrel lengths….and have the same fun in getting them as #1
4.) Guns I hunt with and use often and enjoy shooting.
These I have fun getting too. This group is my nemesis.
I don't buy stuff I don't think I'll keep so I don't sell….. that's my vice on these.

For me the journey of searching for, negotiating a deal, meeting the folks that have the guns, and then finding out all I can about the history on the gun is half the fun of getting them.

Agree. If I haven't shot a gun for 10 years and it has no special sentimental value it's fair game to sell. Especially if I have a better option sitting in front of it.

Depends on what that great uncle did, the memories it might bring back or the provenance you may have on it.
You're not going to get anything for a gun like you describe anyway. Hang it in your shop or hunting camp and raise a glass of good whiskey in remembrance of your great uncle and the hands that had held that old rifle.

I'd only loan a gun to a really good friend, and I'd be embarrassed to give them something of such low quality.
