Ive seeded five years with great success, but this year doesnt have the same weather patterns so i am confused and internet is showing me to wait until a frost...which isnt close in Houston.


So Houston people, when are you overseeding?




In past i've done it as early as Oct 7 and as late as Nov 15.

I don't know much but I know it like cool wet weather. I would wait. Neighbors in Southlake put down seed two weeks ago and have been watering everyday and it's struggling.

I'd wait till mid November. That's usually when we overseed in the San Antonio area and south. For reference, these are athletic fields.

I put it over a septic field and it stays dry compared to no rye.

I seed every fall. I apply day before the first rain event with sub 60 degree temps. Usually week before Halloween. Probably later this year. (HOUSTON)

I live on a golf course in Phoenix. Course was overseeded with rye earlier this week in 108 degrees. Sprouting already. The courses that overseeded last week when it was over 110 are popping right now. Maybe they use a different variety but temperature isn't part of the equation.

I overseeded two weekends ago and have almost a full stand already. My wife loves the look in the winter, so I don't mind having to deal with the mowing if it keeps her happy.

I'm going wheat and oats this year maybe with some Austrian peas. NRCS people told me the Rye has a tendency to be toxic to Bermuda if over seeded to heavy or too often.

I never water… ever. But I do mow every couple of weeks. Planting rye gives me green grass from Oct through early June. Screw trying to keep St Augustine or Centipede alive during the summer.

If this is for your yard, overseeding now is going to require a lot of irrigation. We are rolling into a winter drought and rye requires about 20% more water than bermuda when the daytime temps are above 80 degrees.

Normally i would be considering overseeding my pastures right now. Everything is mowed and ready but without rain in the long term forcast is just a waste of seed. The cooler temperatures expected next week are a plus but long term forcast doesnt look like they will stick around to keep the daytime temps consistently low.

We are in a sensitive climate period right now where damp leaves with warm day temps and cooler night temps start to create conditions for plant disease and fungus.

If you spread seed right now, with no rain, will they sprout now, or will they sit around and wait for moisture?

Or is any morning dew enough to trigger sprouting, but not enough to sustain life/growth?

You need more than morning dew to make them sprout. Even if you got a heavy dew, the topsoil needs to be moist/soft for the seed roots to tiller. Spreading too early without rain can result in birds and other critters eating the seeds

Finally got mine spread on Wednesday. I was waiting on some rain. Took this pic a while ago.

Seeded October 8. Temperature was above 100 most of the month with no rain. This is today. Watered every other day.

My neighbor in the woodlands seeded this week. It has rained all weekend and I see spouts already.

I am finally doing mine tomorrow afternoon in NE Houston. I am expecting sprouts within 7 days.

still wondering this myself.

Just make sure you get perennial Rye. Prettier green & slower growing. Brand doesn't really matter.

I switched to perennial rye about 5 years ago. It's about twice the price, harder to get established, has a finer texture and is way slower growing. Because of the late start this year I went back to annual. Here is my yard now. I seeded a week ago today.

Today is the day in the ATX area!
