Winter Park has been awesome this year. They opened Eagle Wind lift (glade blacks) yesterday. I bombed it 5 times cutting new tracks on each.

13 ski days and counting for me!

How are those runs? I'm a big ol puss and have never been back there. All trees or any steep wide opens? I've always wondered why they're all blacks without bumps.

You can follow the lift and it's just an open run, fairly steep. A great way to get your feet wet.

The rest is trees and some of it is quite steep. I really like it because every run is a unique experience. When it's too steep you just cut a shallow angle.

Thinking about hitting Angel Fire/Red River for a weekend. Haven't been up there in about 40 years! Back in the day we would stay in Red River and ski both Red River and Angel Fire. Angel Fire wasn't much of a town at all then.

Looking at it now, it looks like Angel Fire might actually be the nicer place to stay judging by VRBO. Not really sure. We will ski some, but which town has the better restaurants/bars, etc.? Ski both or just one? Suggestions?

Option C is the best this year: go to anywhere not in NM.

This! Local northern NM here. We have NO snow. Nada. Have not seen this bad is a long time. We're talking nothing.

I'm skiing taos saturday (kids start shredders), paja sunday, and santa fe monday (sister's bday). I bet we still have fun

Srsly all this doom and gloom gets tiring, nearly every year people are wringing hands about how there's no snow in the front range and their spring break trip is ruined, then every jan/feb a couple storms swing through and fill everything in. And for probably 80% of this thread who max out at blue groomers you will be just fine anywhere that makes snow (which is almost all of them). So take a breath and go skiing, if you can't figure out how to have fun even on a low snow year go to the bar.

Damn. Looks like some may be headed that direction this week. We aren't going until February. Other option was to go on up to Wolf Creek.

I plan on going to Paja next month with the Wife and one of my college friends who both have never skied before. It's hard to beat their all day lesson package for $170. The same package at ski Santa Fe would run $500 per person with one less hour of instruction.

Hopefully they will get more snow between now and then but if not, so what. The main point of this trip is to introduce skiing to family and friends without paying some astronomical price. If I just get a few good runs in and can work on fine tuning my mogul skills, I'll be happy with what I get out of the trip. When you are only paying $10 for a lift ticket, it's a lot easier to not care about the snow conditions than with a $200 ticket.

Just got back from 3 days at Wolf Creek this past week. No fresh snow but enough that we had decent, groomed snow to ski on. Could they use more? Sure, but I've skied on much worse during many spring breaks in March/April.

Have an employee that just got back from Angel Fire. Not much snow but unless you are a good enough skier to ski mainly blacks, they've made enough to have runs open for the majority of skiers.

This is a bad year no doubt for northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado but it's still better than sitting at home in shorts trying to enjoy 70 degree Decembers and January's here in Texas.

Paja is a great hill! I may be able to swing up there and do some runs with you if you want to give me a heads up as your trip gets closer.

If we go the Angel Fire/Red River route in February, which town should we stay in? Assume we would be looking at a VRBO.

If you want a ski town with restaurants, etc, go with Red River. Angel Fire is pretty much a grocery store, gas station and I believe 1 Mexican restaurant.

Angel Fire probably has more VRBO's but Red River has plenty along with more shops, bars etc.

Red River tends to have better snow making ability and Angel Fire tends to shut down lifts when the winds get too high. They are close enough that if you need to, you can stay at one and ski at the other if conditions are better. Usually they have very similar natural snow amounts since they are so closely located.

Agree with what others have said. We have a home in Red River and there's lots of VRBO options available. If you are okay not being in downtown RR, look in the Upper Valley. Only 10 min from downtown RR and you can get some really cool VRBO's with wildlife.

Happy to answer any other questions you may have about RR and Angle Fire

That sucks. Enjoy a good ride for Texans maybe. But it's ASS.

Are they even open? I heard they hadnt opened. Nvm looks like they're open but at 28% of the average. I'll pass in that trip to visit the cousins this year. UFF.

You guys Enjoy NM all you want. Lets just call it like it is though: a ****ty year for anyone that's not a Texan.

WC is bounds better than NM right now. It's one of the worst for CO but all of CO is light years ahead of NM.

Sorry but you must love hard packed groomers full of Jerrys.

My kids wouldn't ski that ***** To each there own. When you have access to mltiple Hills year round, you don't get amped and you don't even go when it's like this. But whatever that your vibe. I just sure as hell wouldn't be paying for it and id be on rental gear because your ****s gonna get ****ED!

12 inch base at Paja. Just asked and my cousins have skied 4 days. There comment "we have no Snow. What are you going to ski?".

You guys like to project what you want and not the reality of the locals telling you the truth. It's almost funny but I appreciate the attempt to manifest

Not one NM hill is outside of the bottom 5 worse years in the last 40. Say all you want but the facts are the facts.
It's A ****TY FN YEAR IN NM. Stop trying to play devils advocate. It's a ****TY FN YEAR. You may have fun but that's because you like hard packed man made snow that's grooomed. Personañly thwts hell on a ski hill for us and our kids and all our friends and family. Maybe ta fun if you're from Tx or FL or GA but if you're from CO or NM or anywhere that you can ski you don't get amped for gravel grooomers and a 2/3 of hill doing their best to get on JerryOfTheDay. I'm sorry but it's just not the year.

I'm stoked you can get stoked for a 12 inch base. I sure as hell couldnt. There's more coverage on our drive way down Wulfsohn to City Market than in NM.

Quit trying to say it's decent. It's not. Just get over it. It's not a good year. Say it with me - it's not a good year.

Look at the data. It's there and It's easy to see.

Bayou City

You got the northern NM local of 30+ years telling you there's no snow. It's not just me. Listen to there's people on here that live where you're going. We know whats going on. We live there. Se work there. We ski all the time. Some of us even manage ski ships. I think we know the conditions. We live them…

I'm not trying to be an ass. I'm being 100% honest. Look at the data. Look at the SME look at the SME per per basin. Look at the snowfall vs average. The. Twll me I'm wrong. I'm Not. I wish it wasn't because wildfires are gonna be a ***** and I don't want to lose my house.
But the facts and the facts - I didn't choose them I'm just telling you them.

I guess any base is enough for you guys. Thats cool. I'm out!. I Got better things to do then argue with non locals that know nothing about the conditions on our hills.

Enjoy yalls season.

Yes paja was the first NM area to open. My kids are 3, 6, and 9 and probably not as rad as yours so I'm pretty sure they'll have a good time. The 6 and 9 year olds had a great time at purg a couple weeks ago except when they insisted on skiing a black that was mostly shrubs and rocks. Now they believe me when i tell them you need a lot of snow to ski blacks early season
Bayou City
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah probably. My kids rip. They ski 120-140 days a year and all national top 100. Two are top 50 and ones top 25. So yeah they rip on a different level. Even this year they're gonna probs pull like 70-80. That's not a bad deal for part time.

Bro, this is a TEXAS A&M based message board. We're all Jerrys, complete with Scotchgarded jeans and Starter jackets. And i thought you moved to Mexico?

Unless this is a clever ploy to get people to stop planning spring break ski trips to new mexico, in which case bravo, carry on

There's NO Snow in NM. I'd persoanlly love for all of you except for the people I know that are cool to go there. Less people around here that know nothing but know everything. I'm 100% cool with all of TX picking NM other CO. I'm just trying to give you the real.
