I've got a spot at enchanted rock, but given the cloud cover I'll opt out of the mad house and 5 hour drive

Smart move. People on enchanted rock during the eclipse be like

Crowded in BrazCo & CStat today but no more so than a typical Friday, from what I saw.

Path of totality could shift by 2000 feet according to this guy.

I'm really damn disappointed, but there's no way I'm willing to deal with that bs for a 50/50 shot at seeing it

While the clouds didn't play well, my kids absolutely fell in love with Garner and that alone is worth everything. This weekend reminded me why I love Texas as well. What a beautiful park and just the vibe of the whole place was amazing. My oldest wants to come back every year. I think I will oblige her.

Can somebody explain to me why this eclipse is such a big deal?
1. It's an extremely rare astronomical event. The last one in Texas was in the 1800's.
2. It's really freaking cool. Everyone I know that has seen one says it is on par with stuff like seeing your child born or losing your virginity.

I don't know about that, but I will say it was pretty freaking cool. I live near Brownwood so was just on the edge of totality. Awesome experience and a really odd vibe. Strange seeing solar lights, street lights come on and seeing stars in the sky at 1:45 pm. Definitely different than I expected. I regret not burning a day of vacation and driving 50 miles or so for a better experience.

If I'm still alive for the next one and it's within a few hundred miles I would definitely go and recommend others do as well.

I really don't understand why everyone is making such a big deal about this eclipse. I know this is a 'Total" eclipse, but we saw pretty much the exact same thing only 5 months ago.

My kids will be in school, and I will be at the office. Although, I wish I could justify a vacation for it!

Have you seen a total eclipse? It isn't the same. It isn't pretty much the exact same.

Yes I did. In 2017. It looked pretty much the same as last October to me.

The only difference between this April and last October is a very thin ring visible of the sun. The sun is bright as hell, there will still be visible sunlight around the edge. It's not going to turn to complete darkness all of a sudden. Annular vs Total indeed is "pretty much the same"

You want to revisit this? I saw both the annular and total now, and it was absolutely not even remotely the same.

As others have mentioned, the difference between a partial or even an annular eclipse with a total eclipse is pretty much day and night. WIth a total eclipse, you can look directly at the sun with no protection. You can see the corona. You'll see some planets appear. It's a beautifully eerie experience. I went to Missouri in 2017 and the experience was incredible. Don't miss out on this.

Erm, I'm not sure I would suggest or follow this advice.

I have to come back and eat my crow on this. I took my glasses off to watch totality and it was awesome. I fact, it was almost necessary to see everything clearly. You were right, and I had no idea what I was talking about .

Garner is an great park. My only concern is that it is getting loved to death. Last few times I was out there the the wear and tear (and in some case blatant abuse) was showing pretty bad. But that was about four years ago.

I ended up driving to Lampasas after getting concerned with the cloud cover around Lake Travis...visible satellite photos and modeling looked very favorable to the northwest of Austin. Took off at 11:30. Traffic wasn't bad on 183 but there was a definite crowd of vehicles going out with the same idea. Clouds started thinning up past Leander and as I neared Lampasas...ended up going north on 281 for another 15 minutes as I could see the skies were even clearer in that direction. Ended up with about 90%+ clear skies and no clouds blocking my view. Had a group in a SUV from Oregon park just behind me on the side of the road.

I saw a decent sized crowd along the river in Lampasas (which was nearly on the centerline) but nothing close to the overwhelming cars and crowds on all my drives some were predicting.

Incredibly there were a few cars and trucks that drove by during totality! Guess they didn't care.

Luckily for my brother and his family, who were waiting for a couple of friends to arrive and decided to stay put, a break in the clouds arrived 10 minutes before totality and they got to see the full show!

I embarked on a bit of an alternate strategy to see totality - Dangerfield State Park in NE TX. Awesome little park by the way. A bit of a drive from Houston but well worth it. Clear skies at eclipse time.

Traffic was horrid leaving. At least a dozen other cars on the road - by rural NE TX standards that's practically a traffic jam!

Got back to the west coast last night. Absolutely worth the trip, despite the clouds.

Only one kid on this trip. Two kids traveled for family, wife and the other had gymnastics.

Got to Garner on Friday, stayed in Old Garner. My brother brought his traeger and blackstone, so we ate quite well.

For the eclipse, we climbed Baldy. A lot of people, but not too crowded. Found a spot, ate our lunch and awaited the show.

The sun got smaller and the clouds got thicker.

I was amazed at how dark it got.

Then it was over.

Even though we couldn't see the sun during totality, it was an amazing experience.

But even without the eclipse, worth the trip. The bluebonnets on 83 alone were worth the drive. My son got to float, swim, and fish the Frio. Climb Baldy. Cooked chili on the fire. Eat bluebell. And most Texan of all, my son two stepped at the dance Saturday and Sunday night.

My oldest and I were at the dance Sunday night and we absolutely loved it. Can't wait to get all my kids there and my wife. Other kids passed out hard early so they missed out b
