I'm conflicted honestly on what to do being that it is a 6 hour drive home, but I am pretty sure you just assured having a few more people on the top of the hill. Guess my wife and I will need to lug our 3 year old up there and tell our other kids to get their hiking boots on

You people that think you are making it back Monday are in for a slow surprise.

Definitely dreading this. Trying to decide if it is best to wait until late afternoon / evening to head back, or early (3am) the next morning, and/or detour south through Victoria and take 59 back into Houston instead of I-10.

So I thought about that and looked at the map. I'll be near Utopia and need to get to Spring. I lived in Beeville for nearly a decade so I know the southern route well.

Here the issue though. You'll be in the path of totality for a significant amount of time trying to get down south to 59, and NONE of those roads are wider than two lanes with at best the occasional passing lane.

So you get to 35 and head toward? It parallels the path of totality, so heading south likely won't help much unless just that many people don't consider options South of US90. If you're watching South of 90 then maybe you could skirt South of San Antonio and run down to 59 or even cut east on 72 and head towards Kenedy onto Cuero. But east of Pawnee I'm pretty sure that all still 2 lane highway

I think the answer is to enjoy the event then embrace the suck and take the most direct route home.

Worst case we go back to our site. We have 5 sites in a row for our entire party, so plenty of room.

Probably do. Is there a trail head outside of the park or will it be limited to guests of the park?

Don't see any. Doesn't seem like any good places to enter the park there. But the park is also going to be beyond max capacity, so we might be better off just staying in the campground.

Same, but I'm glad I didn't pay $600/night for an RV spot like others. The place we found is brand new in Johnson City and was only $150/night and is more of an RV resort with a big pool, playgrounds, etc.

Looking forward to some nights camping with my family.

Still got people coming to the ranch, gonna smoke two pork butts and a chicken, gonna drink, gonna watch it get dark, might rain, might not, I'm looking forward to anything anyway. It's all good.

Consider buying a gas can or two for when you get stuck in traffic.

Can somebody explain to me why this eclipse is such a big deal? I don't ever recall people talking about an eclipse months in advance and driving, let alone flying, out of their way to go see one.

Solar eclipses, especially total solar eclipses, can generate significant excitement and interest for several reasons:

  • Rarity: Total solar eclipses are relatively rare events that only occur every few years in any given location on Earth. The path of totality, where the sun is completely obscured by the moon, is even more limited, often spanning only a narrow band across the Earth's surface. This rarity makes each total solar eclipse a unique and special occurrence that many people want to witness in their lifetime.
  • Spectacle: A total solar eclipse is a spectacular natural phenomenon. The sudden darkness during the day, the dramatic appearance of the sun's corona, and the changes in the environment, such as a drop in temperature and the behavior of animals, make it a captivating event for observers. It's a chance to experience something awe-inspiring and out of the ordinary.
  • Cultural significance: Throughout history, solar eclipses have been viewed with awe and sometimes fear by various cultures around the world. They have been interpreted as omens, portents, or signs from the gods. While modern scientific understanding has demystified eclipses, they still carry cultural significance for many people, often evoking a sense of wonder and fascination.
  • Social media and publicity: In recent years, advancements in communication technology and the rise of social media have contributed to increased awareness and publicity surrounding solar eclipses. Information about upcoming eclipses spreads quickly and widely, leading to heightened interest and excitement. Celebrities, scientists, and media outlets often contribute to the buzz by discussing the eclipse and sharing tips for viewing it safely.
  • Community and shared experience: Solar eclipses have a way of bringing people together. Communities often organize viewing events, festivals, and gatherings centered around the eclipse, providing opportunities for people to share the experience with others. The sense of camaraderie and shared wonder adds to the appeal of witnessing the eclipse in person.
  • Overall, while solar eclipses have always been fascinating celestial events, the combination of their rarity, spectacle, cultural significance, and modern communication channels has contributed to the widespread excitement and anticipation surrounding them in recent years.

    1. It's an extremely rare astronomical event. The last one in Texas was in the 1800's.
    2. It's really freaking cool. Everyone I know that has seen one says it is on par with stuff like seeing your child born or losing your virginity.

Considering this is the first total eclipse in Texas in our lifetime I think it is pretty significant.

At Whatburger in Columbus. Traffic on I-10 west is pretty normal. Only slowdown was for people looking at an 18 Wheeler that ran off the road.

Headed to my parents house in Hunt. Booked a fully refundable room for Sunday night in Dallas in case we have to pivot. Wife's grandpa lives in Little Rock so can go out there Monday morning if needed.
