Wild things can happen on the outdoors board.

Can they locate a stolen truck? Is it already in Mexico or chopped up? I suspect it was taken out of my driveway during the middle of night last night/this morning. No video.

For reference, 2020 Red GMC Sierra 1500 AT4. Texas plates.

You want us to locate a truck without an address or plate number?

Thefts are way up and it's been tied to vehicle sales in Mexico. Turn it in to your insurance and pray they don't find it. Vehicles after a theft are not in primo condition...

Did you call OnStar and have them locate it?

Musta been one hell of a party. Didn't notice a truck missing in the driveway until 1300.

It's still in Houston, probably hidden on a ROW to see if anyone comes looking for it via trackers.

In a few days it'll be in a chop shop getting stripped or having the VIN swapped. Go ahead and consider it a total loss. I sent my insurance company ~20 pages of receipts and they did me well.

I wouldn't recommend a GM truck to anyone living in or near a major Texas city.

The cops can call them and still track it if you report it stolen.

I've worked a lot of stolen car insurance claims the last couple years.
Many thieves rip out the OnStar stuff as soon as they get the stolen car a few minutes away from where they took it.
Lots of Thieves are also now hooking up jammers inside stolen vehicles go counteract gps

It's probably sitting in a storage lot or an apartment complex lot right now and they'll move it again to / toward its final destination in a day or so.

Do you have any suggestions for anti-theft devices?

My 2021 AT4 got stolen this summer while visiting San Antonio on a day trip. It was stolen in the middle of the day on a Sunday while we were at a Museum. My hey unlocked it with a spoofed key fob.

They immediately disabled the On-Star and my kid's air pods that were left in the truck. Made a police report with San Antonio PD and got a call about 36 hours later that it had been recovered in Alice Texas heading towards Mexico. The thieves were pulled over in Alice and arrested, they had removed the front plates but not the rear.

It was returned to me about 10 days later on a flat bed. The only damage was a cut wire for the horn and the removal of the On-Star module (besides being filthy from sitting in an impound lot for a week). It had not been smoked in or damaged in any way and all my possessions inside the truck were still there when I got it back.

I was extremely lucky to get it back, as far as getting your vehicle stolen it was about the best outcome possible. Except it still ended up costing me $1000 after paying my deductible for towing and the repairs.

Compustar T13 (security) and an IGLA (kill switch) are the current go to's.

Tracked my buddies 2021 gm 1500 to an apartment in north Houston a couple weeks ago. Cops basically would not look for it until we found it and they had stripped the control box module out and screwed up his under dash wiring pretty good. They ripped out onstar tracker and we were able to track it off an air tag hidden under back seat.

A decent option, but doesn't allow use of remote start. Living in TX, that's a deal killer for me. IGLA does.

You can still remote start with Ravelco, just not of the fob is pulled out.

Hidden air tag is going to do nothing for you. They'll get a notification that an air tag is tracking their location and disable it within minutes.

No they don't have to find the AirTag to disable it, if they have an IPhone they will get a notification on their phone within minutes that they are being tracked by an AirTag not connected to their iPhone and it will give them the option to disable tracking on the AirTag from their IPhone. Works the same for AirPods.

An AirTag for tracking criminals/theft of property will only work if the criminal doesn't have an iPhone. If they have an iPhone your airtag will be disabled within minutes regardless of if they physically find it or not.

I used to agree with that but literally found my buddies truck off an air tag 3 weeks ago in Aldine so I would say it's worth the extra tracker for $25

I guess for $25 it doesn't hurt, The point that I was trying to make is that hiding an AirTag is nowhere near 100% reliable and can easily be disabled with an iPhone whether they physically find it or not.

In your buddies case he got lucky that whoever took his truck didn't use an iPhone or was a complete moron that didn't disable it when they got the notification.

Point is, if you use an AirTag for gps/recovery of property you are relying on luck to be able to track your property. It's just an FYI that AirTags have limitations for that application.

Had a friend that had his brand new chevy truck stolen from the valet at the Drover in Ft. Worth on NYE.

So far it has vanished like a fart in the wind. Key fob was at the valet station and when they went to go get it.....they could not find it.

I suspect an inside job, but who knows?!?!

So if I buy an airtag to throw in a suitcase, or briefcase or backpack, or whatnot when traveling, and if I'm on a bus with a bunch of strangers, a random person has the ability to just shut it off? Seriously?

No, if you the owner of the AirTag is nearby it will not send the notification. But, if you are not nearby and it is traveling with someone that has an iPhone that the AirTag is not registered with it will send the notification with the ability to make it make a chime so you can find it and the ability to have it stop tracking.

Essentially they were being used nefariously to track people without their knowledge so Apple put these protections in place to be able to find/disable them.

That's not the way air tags work, it can't be disabled with another person's iPhone. A thief would have to physically remove the battery. Yes, they can get an alert and audible chime (if speaker is not deactivated). Apple tells you to physically locate the air tag to disable it or go to the police, no "remote disabling" option, which would of course defeat the whole purpose.
