We are soon going to be in the market for an upgrade for my wife. We have 3 kids. We will be getting a used vehicle. Probably 50-60k miles or less. This question is mainly concerning the powertrain differences between the two vehicles. Features are more something I'm going to let my wife decide.

My thoughts currently:

The 5.3 L V8 in the GM vehicles is probably one of the most longstanding engines out there. Are they still as dependable as always?

The Ford seems to give you a little more bang for you buck in terms of features for your money, but I'm not sure about a V6 moving around the Expedition Max. It seems like it should have a V8

The OB knows stuff. What say you?

Wife drives a navigator L, I have the f150 with the same engine.

I had the cam phaser rattle in my truck, have not experienced it in the navigator.

The navigator hauls ass. 0-60 is faster and smoother than my truck. It does work the turbo pretty hard as you get out into the hill country going 80mph. Have not towed with it.

I wouldn't be concerned with if it has the getup, it's got it.

What will be interesting the longevity of working that turbo so hard. Got about 40k miles on it, knock on wood, no power train issues so far

My wife has the Expedition max, and that V6 will move it. You'll be surprised.

As to the poster above, the Navigator does has the same engine, but it is tuned to a higher HP than the Ford models. Used Expy will be sitting at about 360 HP while the Navigator is tuned up to 500 HP.

If you're buying one passed it's warranty, you can purchase a tune and some hardware (about $2500 all in) and get the Expedition up to about 650 HP. I did this because I own the tool to load the tune. That big boy hauls ass now.

We purchased a Yukon XL about a year ago. I don't know if the whole COVID Supply chain snarls had something to do with it, but we have had to take it in for warranty fixes almost constantly. It is nothing major . . .electronics not working, rear seat parts getting snarled when moving the seats, etc. Still, it definitely did not come off the factory floor in 100% working condition. One of the plastic strips on the roof came loose and was waving in the wind about 10 minutes after I drove it out of the dealership.

Drivetrain is the same old reliable model. I got my last Yukon to 175k and the drivetrain was just fine. The snow and ice of living up north pretty much ruined the suspension parts and it became more costly to repair that then tI could get in trade in value.

GMC claims, and I do think it is accurate, that you should expect a 250K mileage life for a drivetrain with proper maintenence. That is hard to beat.

Interior is incredibly spacious and I like the style and amenities.

The V6 will move the expy max better than the 5.3 V8

I have it in the navigator. It pulls and hauls booty. It's got a turbo so it should.

Both engines and transmissions are reliable. Can't go wrong with either.

I would consider other things. Personally I would NOT touch a used of either right now because it likely means they were built during Covid years with crappy sub- suppliers parts quality. I'd either buy a new 2024 or I'd wait to get a used '23. I wouldn't touch a '20 or '21 or '22 of either.

I have a early year '22 and it's been in for warranty work twice under 15,000 miles. Like the user above stated it's not engine or transmission work, the problem has been all the accessory parts, electronics, hatch/tailgate motors, cooling system parts, infotainment kind of parts.

My wife needs the same. I'm either getting her a Sequoia or a Tundra with a bed cover when the '24 are available.

The V6 in the Expy is the second gen Ecoboost with the 10 speed transmission. Same combo Ford has been putting in them and the F150s since 2017. It has plenty of power to move around that Expedition.

Avoid the 2017-2018 year models, that 10 speed had a tendency to have a hard time hunting for the right gear. My wife's 2019 Expy doesn't seem to have that problem.

2017 was the last year of the old design and has the 6 speed.

You are correct. 2017 was the first year they put that motor/trans in the F150, the Expy was a year later.

Thanks for the detailed info. Our budget is probably going to keep us in a 2018-2020

Navigators aren't 500 HP. Around 440, maybe 450. Expeditions are 400.

I stand corrected. I was referring to previous year models, but I was still wrong. '20 Navigator is 450 hp. '20 Expedition is 375 hp across most models. Platinum level trim gets a boost to 400 hp.

Tsuag10- I have a 2019 limited stealth edition 4wd for sale at 40.5k with 66.5k miles. I do have an extended warranty to 85k miles that is transferable. It has 2nd row captains chairs which is nice if you have car seats. 3rd row folds flat; not manual

I had the cam phasers replaced last year which is a known issue for the 3.5L engine through 21. It tows a 5600lb surf boat wonderfully and has done very well on mountain trips. If interested shoot me an email austinrb1 at yahoo

Heard plenty of talk about gm transmission issues. Hopefully they are resolved, but for sure make sure the model years you are interested in don't have common issues. My sister loves her suburbans and has put 200k miles on several, but has been lucky to buy mid to end of the run for each bodystyle where they had all the issues and kinks worked out.

GMT800 is probably the pinnacle of reliability for GM and they've gone sideways (GMT900) or downhill from there (but fancier and more expensive).

Expeditions really improved once they put the ecoboost in there, like a completely different vehicle level of improvement. Get a later one (current bodystyle) that has the Port injectors as well to prevent carbon buildup on the intake valves.

OB style answer: new Escalade ESV.
Just bought my second one because I have four kids and need every bit of space I can get the the suburban have not been as reliable or hold their value as well. Switched to a new one because the 2015 I had started having issues at 76k miles and hurt to fix because outside of warranty, so I wanted to get back into warranty.

Used high end large SUVs are still overpriced…I bought my escalade used for 45k in Jan 2019 and sold it last week for 28.5k…the company I work for has GM supplier pricing which got me 6k off of MSRP and luckily I had been saving cash for this for a while and didn't have to finance anything in this terrible interest rate market, which also saves a ton of money.

They have great engines, drive great, good tech, and prett much all come 4x4.

Have been looking for new burbs/Yukon xl's/expedition max the last few days. Someone tried to run a left turn blinking yellow light and my wife t-boned them in the intersection as she was coming through with the right of way. The car is totaled. It was a 2022 expedition xlt we bought new last November.

After looking at the Navigator Ls, we feel like that may be the best option for resale value and seems like the motor is much more tuned up than the expedition, except for the Timberline, I believe that motor is 440 hp.

Toyota Sequoia. Avoid the boost/ turbo problems.

If you're looking at resale value, get a Land Cruiser.

Sequoia has a boost and hybrid in the newer models I believe. Only the older models don't

I mentioned this in the auto board when someone asked a similar question. A good friend of mine was driving on 105 in plantersville and was t boned in his 22 expy max. It rolled 3x and landed upright and the only serious injury was a broken wrist his wife suffered in the passenger seat. Everyone was able to crawl out of the back hatch, His wife, his daughter, his 1.5yr old son and himself. Those are tanks

I just traded my 2014 Silverado 1500 in for an expedition max king ranch (bought a 2020 with 30k miles for $55k including my trade) for similar reasons. 3 kids and all the associated crap didn't fit in the truck but they have loads of space now, it accelerates fast, and the king ranch with the max towing package can haul almost 10,000# which is more than my truck could. I have a 3 horse bumper pull I use on occasion so needed something to tow also. The expedition max was one of the few that could do it. I also liked the inside better than the new suburbans. The Jeep Grand Wagoneers are really nice and spacious (especially the L version) too but too expensive, and new this year so there aren't many used ones available.
