The topic is admittedly not outdoors, but this is the most resourceful board...

Out-of-state tuition over 4 years will cost an extra $100,000.

Anybody here familiar with someone who was able to get that waived in part or in whole?

I don't remember the details, but if I recall correctly, I received a scholarship of a certain amount which triggered in state tuition

It's $4,000 threshold, but it has to come from the university and all of the ones for 2023 have been awarded.

I went to A&M from Georgia because my dad, LSU undergrad and Baylor dental school alum really wanted me to go here.

He taught at the dental school in Houston, so I got in-State tuition because he worked for the tu system. May not help, but just fyi. When I was a freshman, TAMU mailed the $$ difference to me when he got it all straightened out.

Dad: Did you get any check in the mail?
Me: check? hmmm... what check? What does it look like?
Dad: you little ****, mail that to me.

does NOT have to come from the university.

Easiest way to get it waived... join the Corps... automatic.

Otherwise, any competitively awarded scholarships totaling $4k or more will trigger an OOS tuition waiver.

maybe it has changed. this is copied from their website:

Quote:

The student must have competed with other students, including Texas residents, for the scholarship and the scholarship must be awarded by a Texas A&M University college or departmental scholarship committee or university representative.

This was our experience in 2020. Fellow okie here. Son was accepted to engineering but recieved TAMU scholarship just shy of what qualified for the oos waiver. His research found that the total oos admissions is less than what A&M is allowed to award a waiver. In short, don't hold your breath. Only other way was to have started a 529 in Texas before some year (we had not). Good luck. Our son chose Purdue where his scholarship money went much further (Indiana oos tuition is a lot less)

You're in Oklahoma? If so, and your kid has been admitted to OU or Okie Lite, I'd highly suggest they go there if you can't get in-state tuition for A&M. The cost difference doesn't justify it. I'm at a Houston based company you've heard of, and there are plenty Okies here, and all are solid.

One of the guys in our **** talking CFB text group from my old company has an engineering degree from OU and is a solid guy. Dude has had a great career thus far and should continue it.

I love A&M, but not for the premium.

Anecdotal, but the one engineer we hired from okie lite was extremely subpar in the intelligence department. That's putty it mildly. I've heard that about that school from several others. Think it's horrific academically

Join the Corps.

Murray Scholarship

Corps of Cadets Scholarships

It is as simple as that.

No contract or military commitment required.

Unless things have changed (I graduated in 2017), you can get an OOS waiver for every semester that you recieve at least $1000 merit-based scholarship.

As others have said, you can also join the corps and get in-state tuition.

FWIW I was in pretty consistent communication with an advisor of the specific degree plan I wanted (ChemE) and she was able to find me a scholarship program that met the minimum for the waiver. If you aren't having luck through the university, sometimes those advisors know programs that can help that aren't easy to find online.

Hope this helps!

Having been in the Corps as an out of state resident, let me assure you it's not that simple and a lot of people join the Corps, get their first tuition bill, get confused and then mad, and quit.

YOU MUST receive a scholarship for $1000 or more per semester to get in state tuition. BUT, there are a lot of scholarships that are for cadets only, so the likelihood that you get one of those is much higher. They are still merit based though.

I know this because I lost my Corps scholarship my sophomore year, stayed in the Corps, and the university tried to hit me with an out of state tuition bill. The only thing that saved me was the fact that my dad had moved back to Texas and hired on as faculty at an experiment station, which meant I was entitled to in state tuition.

You could find examples of that from every single school. A&M, Texas, UChicago, MIT, etc.

You're probably too late in the process, but your family can start a Scholarship for your high school, it can be called the MasonB Family Scholarship, awarded each year to a deserving senior. Some years it might be $100 depending on the Scholarship's finances, other years, like its inaugural year it could be $4000 (wink wink). The Scholarship has to set it up where it's competitive and everyone who qualifies can apply, but the Scholarship board has some subjective leeway to decide the winner if you are picking up what I'm laying down.

It's $4,000 per year now and must be from an institutional scholarship program.

Except looks at their rankings… And while I would agree for some majors, engineering is not one you should be able to get through being incompetent.

Did I miss where the OP stated they were looking at engineering? Even still, an extra $100k for A&M would cause me to look elsewhere.

No. Was just combining my anecdotal evidence in engineering with the schools academic rankings (which don't necessarily mean that much these days).

Only way to get avoid out of state costs is to be an instate resident. Only way for them to get university approved residency is to work for an average of 20 hours/week for 12 months (can't be a job affiliated with the school). Both my kids just finished their year and our now considered residents.

I'm guessing it's not $4/credit hour in-state and $12/credit hour out of state any more? (might be if it was Fall of '78)

This. Rent an apartment somewhere and work for a year, then apply. Won't hurt to work.

This is not exactly true, as numerous posters on this thread have posted.

The Murray scholarship is not technically an instate tuition waiver -- it is a university-funded scholarship for out of state members of the Corps of Cadets that offsets OOS tuition.

You don't have to establish residency to get it.

If your kid quits the Corps, they lose the scholarship and will be charged fill OOS tuition.
