Been wanting to start reading some again and Westerns are a favorite of mine. I've probably read every Lamour book.... What are some of your other favorite authors?

Read any of Elmer Kelton's books. They are all good

The Stonecroft Saga books by B.N. Rundell and the Crockett's Western Saga by Robert Vaughn are westerns that have some history built in. Easy reads like the dime store westerns of old.

"Political Correctness is a doctrine fostered by a delusional, illogical, liberal minority, and rabidly promoted by an unscrupulous mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a turd by the clean end."

Elmer kelton. I thought his earlier ones were better than later ones but later ones were good too. Time it never rained, stand proud, day the cowboys quit we're all great.

Good suggestions so far.

Craig Johnson writes the Longmire mysteries. Good books with an outdoor twist.

All the Pretty Horses is one of my favorite movies - I had no idea it was a book! Let alone part of a trilogy!

Lonesome Dove is my favorite book of all time.

Riders of the Purple Sage by Zane Gray is a classic.

Here is the list I have on my need to read list, can't personally vouch for any of them yet:

Doc - Mary Doria Russell

The Last Kind Words Saloon - Larry McMurtry

Anything for Billy - Larry McMurtry

The Sisters Brothers - Patrick Dewitt

Hondo - Louis L'amour

The Son - Philipp Meyer

Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West - Cormac McCarthy

Stand Proud - Elmer Kelton

The Good Old Boys - Elmer Kelton

The Time It Never Rained - Elmer Kelton

The Wolf and the Buffalo - Elmer Kelton

Great suggestions! For those who have read Lonesome Dove, how much better is it than the tv series?

As great as the TV series is, the book is better. Lonesome Dove is actually part of a 4 book series about Woodrow and Augustus' lives. Lonesome Dove gets all of the attention, but my personal favorite in the series is Comanche Moon.

The first two books are wholly separate plots/ characters, then the protagonist from each meet up in the third

A bit off subject, but I met this guy recently. I asked him about his name and he said that Elmer was his grandfather's cousin. He said he'd read all of his books but only met him once, when he was a kid.

This guy is a singer/songwriter in his own right, but plays for Pat Green and others.

I'm currently reading Butcher's Crossing by John Williams and it's great.

The story of an Ivy league dropout from Boston who travels west to hunt buffalo. He joins up with a buffalo hunter who convinces him to go up into the mountains in search of a valley with abundant herds.

I'll second The Son, and all four of the Lonesome Dove series.

Deals with the west but not so much in the "Cowboys and Indians" sense…..Dragon Teeth by Michael Crichton.

It's about the guys digging up dinosaur bones in the West back in the late 19th century. It's actually pretty damn riveting and opened my eyes to a piece of history I really hasn't even considered.

modelled after the doomed Santa Fe expedition where we Texians were trying to establish a trade route from Austin to Santa Fe and after being ambushed by the Comancheros outside of Quitaque, the mexican army marched them all the way to Mexico City where they spent three years (long enough sentence for ya?)

on the real side, they burried all the trade goods and a lot of it has been found via metal detector. The Quitaque museum is open on Saturdays from 10-4pm only., Significant artifacts in there including a lot of the jewelry from the lost expedition.

Blood and Thunder - Hampton Sides. Tells the story of Kit Carson's exploits across the west. Fascinating read, he lived a really interesting life.

I too met Michael Kelton about 10 years ago at a show during HLSR BBQ Cook-off. I took his shot for him so he wouldn't screw up the next set. Really down to earth guy. Said he's read some of Elmer's books.

And anyone who likes Lonesome Dove should read the Goodnight (Captain Call) biography

I read Monte Walsh as a kid and still love it today as a 67 year old. It's been made into movies twice, but the book is still better.
