Looking for a generator to power 1 AC unit (4 ton) in case of rolling blackouts in the summer and a few electronics indoors. Or if we have another freeze event, I need to be able to power and gas furnace, pool pump and various electronics. I will connect it to my natural gas line or use propane in the event of the NG pressure dropping too low. Really want to get as low of THD as I can without spending stupid $.

Having a hard time deciding on these and would like y'alls input or experience.

#1. Westinghouse 12,000.
$2,500-2700 online. Has the 5% or less THD that I want.
Propane running watts is 10,800, so NG will be slightly less.

#2 Duromax 13,000 hxt triful
$2,500
Already setup for NG hookup. 8,500 running watts on NG
THD - 10-12% (I read online somewhere)
100% copper winding.

Following, I have a very similar need…

See previous threads.

My two cents is that a whole home generator is not ideal due to size it sits on the ground so if flooding occurs the generator will no longer be able to function.

Would look into buying 2-3 smaller generators that are easier to move and you can take them with you if you ever end up moving.

I have that Westinghouse generator. Haven't had to use it yet. (Knock on wood). I run it monthly on alcohol free gas. No issues.

Tri-fuel is awesome.

Only knock on duromax is not being electronic friendly, but I know several people with them like me and no one has had any issues.

I have a whole home surge protector. Would that allow me to use a generator with higher THD.

I talked to Westinghouse when I bought the Duromax 2 years ago. They were supposedly developing a tri-fuel generator, but didn't know when it would be available.

If that was an option it would be a no brainer. But alas.

Check out the Facebook page "Generators: portable generators to power entire house". Folks there seem to favor Duromax, but there are comments about all makes. There is also a good guidebook on how/what to use for a good, safe hook-up (interlock or auto-transfer switch, etc.)

Its a little more expensive but I went with the Winco 1200 tri fuel. Have not had to use it yet but have it all ready to go.

sorry to bump an old thread...but did you wind up going with the Westinghouse? And if so, any feedback?

FYI they're both made on the same assembly line. The 5% THD number on the Westinghouse is at zero load. Duromax lists their THD at load as they are part of an organization that includes Honda et al.

I don't recall the exact specifics.

more worried about westinghouse not listing BTU at full load requirements and only having a 1/2 inch quick connect inlet. I've talked to their customer service folks...and they just say to ask the plumber what to find out what I need. I just emailed them back saying the plumber isn't going to know wtf YOU require for YOUR generator.....guess we'll see if they respond LOL.
