Our plans changed slightly today. We were originally supposed to go out and escort her in, but the decision was made to stay at the dock. Our vendor secured a spot at pier 21, directly across from the dry dock. It was still an awesome experience and so glad that I was included.
Let me tell you, that lead tug & her captain put in a full days work. No doubt, they were hand selected. Well done.
Corpus apparently didn't submit a bid. Its actually half of a nearly 1000 foot dry dock, but is still plenty big for the Texas.
I anecdotally know the Capt, lives in my neighborhood, kids went to same schools. definitely hard work!

At drydock
When I was a kid In the mid 60's Dad (class of 42) took me to the Battlegrounds. They were stripping the Teakwood off the deck and piling it up and burning it.
Dad and I loaded up as much of it as we could fit in the family Station Wagon.
Dad had gavels made from some of it and gave them to past Governors and Presidents.
One of the Governors named Dad as an Admiral in the Texas Navy for his actions in saving some of the old Teak. The paper towel holder in my home is made from this wood as well as my reading lamp.
I donated some of the wood several years ago so that pistol grips could be made from it.
Also lots of large slot head Brass Screws.
This move is a great thing for this Ship.

Texas was the first battleship in the US fleet to launch an aircraft, which was used to spot rounds from the main guns. Regardless of where she ends up, the long term goal is to dry berth her. As long as she's floating she'll need ever increasingly expensive dry docking every 20 years. One of the reasons she's in the condition shes in today is she's 10-15 years overdue for her regular drydocking.

My uncle was on her as a machinist in and around 1939. He said the catapult they used to launch was from using gunpowder... the same used for the guns.

Most likely powder from the 5in guns. The 14's use powder bags that weigh in at (I was told) 100lbs. The "training bag" I picked up was substantially lighter, maybe 60 or 70 lbs as I recall?Gunny456 said:
