I wonder how they are going to dry dock her, that facility isn't equipped for a ship as big as Texas for dry docking
They found a drydock in the bahamas that was for cruise ships that needed repair. They bought it, fixed it and brought it to Texas. It arrived back in June and is ready for the Texas.

Is she going back to same spot once the work is complete?
Either Baytown, Galveston or Beaumont

The state has stated that she needs to be somewhere that will generate enough revenue from visitors to pay for her upkeep, and San Jacinto wasn't getting it done unfortunately.

I thought I saw somewhere that Corpus next to the Lex was an option too

Our plans changed slightly today. We were originally supposed to go out and escort her in, but the decision was made to stay at the dock. Our vendor secured a spot at pier 21, directly across from the dry dock. It was still an awesome experience and so glad that I was included.

Let me tell you, that lead tug & her captain put in a full days work. No doubt, they were hand selected. Well done.

Corpus apparently didn't submit a bid. There seems to be a thought that museum ships do better as solo acts versus close to one another where they would tend to dilute each other's attendance or supplemental support from local government.

Its actually half of a nearly 1000 foot dry dock, but is still plenty big for the Texas.

Google shows that to have happened a few years before the Texas

No doubt quite the history…the 1st marine division was established aboard the Texas.

It is also the only ship I've ever bartended on for a bunch of WW2 veterans who received her support during the Guadalcanal.

When I was a kid In the mid 60's Dad (class of 42) took me to the Battlegrounds. They were stripping the Teakwood off the deck and piling it up and burning it.
Dad and I loaded up as much of it as we could fit in the family Station Wagon.
Dad had gavels made from some of it and gave them to past Governors and Presidents.
One of the Governors named Dad as an Admiral in the Texas Navy for his actions in saving some of the old Teak. The paper towel holder in my home is made from this wood as well as my reading lamp.
I donated some of the wood several years ago so that pistol grips could be made from it.
Also lots of large slot head Brass Screws.
This move is a great thing for this Ship.

Here's my source. I'm old but I'll admit I wasn't a first hand witness. Says the Texas was also the first ship to be equipped with anti- aircraft guns.

They need to put her along side the cruise ship pier down in Galveston. The folks getting ready to head out down there always have a few hours to kill after they get into town and checked in.

Texas launched an airplane in 1916, it first happened 6 years earlier. Beginning of Carrier Aviation

Texas launches airplane
It appears the Texas was the first battleship to launch a plane, but not the first warship. First Airplane Takeoff from Warship November 14, 1910 (si.edu)

Agree, Galveston is the most logical choice IMO

Texas was the first battleship in the US fleet to launch an aircraft, which was used to spot rounds from the main guns. It wasn't the first to ever launch an aircraft in history.

Regardless of where she ends up, the long term goal is to dry berth her. As long as she's floating she'll need ever increasingly expensive dry docking every 20 years. One of the reasons she's in the condition shes in today is she's 10-15 years overdue for her regular drydocking.

My uncle was on her as a machinist in and around 1939. He said the catapult they used to launch was from using gunpowder... the same used for the guns.
Heck of deal.

Most likely powder from the 5in guns. The 14's use powder bags that weigh in at (I was told) 100lbs. The "training bag" I picked up was substantially lighter, maybe 60 or 70 lbs as I recall?

Either way, Heck of a deal, indeed!!!

Glad to hear this. They should have done that last time they fixed it up. San Jacinto has NOTHING around it besides the monument, battlefield and a bunch of refineries.
