OMG! I don't know exactly how a 25 mile stretch of 290 W of Austin had a deep meandering gouge, but I suspect it was something very similar to this.

I don't know what is more ridiculous- that someone could not notice a trailer on its side, or that it's 2023 and people are STILL filming vertically.

I was helping a friend take some old farm scrap to a metal recycling yard. As we were leaving, we seem some guys dragging in a trailer. The trailer had only one tire, the other hub was leaving a nice gouge in the asphalt. It's amazing how stupid people are.

Also amazing how many people never EVER check their rear view mirrors whether they are towing anything or not.

LOL, This one takes the cake of most of the ones I have seen lately.

Driver's wife: "Honey, we should really complain to U-haul. Their trailers don't pull very smoothly. I'm glad you had their professional hook it up for us, though."

Ouch. That's why closed spaces for fuel tanks and inboards are required to have adequate venting. Doesn't help to have the vents and then cover or block them with something, either.
Aggietaco

Not adequate venting, they are required to have a blower. No big deal if you fuel up and then drive to the launch, but if you re-fuel on the water, you had better know what you're doing.

A **** hair away from death this dude was.
Really dumb place to stand in the dark when people are trying to launch boats.

These guys were apparently friends that were there together

I wonder if they knew, figured they couldn't fix it, noticed they could still move, and just said "F it"

That's part of the reason why I have that release cord tied up so it's very short. I don't want something on my truck to "grab" it.

Garage door wasn't installed and balanced correctly anyway. Shouldn't have just fallen due to releasing it from the chain. Sucks regardless.

You guys tracking on this 92' Viking that beached in FL after losing all power?

I saw it posted on QC yesterday and then a few other accounts, this wavy boats video was suggested last night. Watching this video, clearly the SeaTow swimmer guy deserves a bonus for his effort.

I found this thread on HullTruth when I was trying to find out if it was recovered last night. It doesn't look like they were successful as these pictures were posted at dawn this morning. Recovery efforts continue.

I thought the same at first, but I think the door was pulled down while the boat was snagged on the rope. If the door wasn't balanced properly the weight limits on the door opener probably wouldn't have ever been able to raise the door.

Update salvage of this Viking:

I have heard now from multiple sources that this 92' Viking was headed south bound from Palm Beach to Ft Lauderdale when she lost all power and was not able to drop anchor, or get a tow in time before it was beached in Delray.

Tow boats tried pulling her off, but ended up snapping multiple lines. The tide dropped fast, and the vessel was almost completely high and dry. Tow boats will give it another try tonight at high tide. If unsuccessful, they will most likely have an excavator to assist in the morning.

Why they decided to run out outside in 8-10' seas blowing 20+ is still a mystery…

This is very unfortunate, and a ****ty situation for all involved. Best of luck to all the captains towing tonight and stay safe.
If they were voluntarily out in 8-10s they got got.

92' Viking ... the sea dgaf and wrecked their ass.

Surprised that they weren't able to drop an anchor or failed to have a plan for dropping anchor with no power. In 8-10s whoever was up forward trying to deal with he anchor was probably getting the **** beat out of them.

Lol at them trying to pull that off with a towboat. They probably have to dig a channel with a excavator and barge. Salvage cost gonna be a lot.

Looks like they de-fueled and deballasted and were able to float it and tow it off at high tide.

Bent struts and deflected prop shafts gonna cost a lot of money to fix and will cause recurring problems if not fixed right.

Curious what happens here. Does insurance pay out? I read this to understand that it was being delivered to the new owner, so they had not taken possession, therefore wouldn't be liable? Would this fall on the ferry company? Or am I way off here? Would this fall squarely on the shoulders of the captain and will there be repercussions for him?

Sorry, I'm really boat dumb.

Wow, ended up getting it unstuck by offloading fuel and pulling with a big tug and a smaller tug waaaay off the beach. Reading that tht thread made me realize how much more difficult it is to recover when things go south on a boat that size vs a 21 footer

Pretty amazing that's all the damage it sustained. Somewhere in the thread it was mentioned that the boat was there in the first place because of engine issues, which were supposed to have been fixed by then but popped up again while underway

active investigation on why the fire suppression system went off which shut down all power.
This makes sense for a total loss of power. Fire suppressant displaces oxygen and will starve engines for air necessary for combustion. Often times fire suppression systems are connected to a spring loaded guillotine valve in the fuel system that cuts all fuel to the engine room. So if halon went off nobody could safely get in the engine room to deal with the problem until it was properly ventilated. Sounds like all around worst case scenario.
Stat Monitor Repairman
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Boat builder probably had hull insurance on the vessel but it probably won't cover the total loss for the boat builder. Often times hull insurance this comes with a high deductible / owners share to discourage insurance fraud.

The boat builder may be out a lot of money at the end of the day as the could be a salvage lien on the hull thats got to get paid. Extensive repair costs to repair structural damage to shafts, struts and rudders. Also the vessel itself is devalued now to some extent because its been grounded.

Also if you do an emergency shutdown on engines operating at speed it can cause serious damage to the engine itself. Fuel starvation and if a damper went off that seals off the air intake the sudden pressure differential can suck gaskets and seals into the engine causing all kinds of problems.

Almost 0 chance of recovering money from the captain.

Also they'll be a big fight with the manufacturer of fire suppression system as to why it presumably malfunctioned.

This is a huge problem that will cost millions of dollars at the end of the day.

Thieves stealing lower units in Miami. You looking at probably $10K each with prop.

I was wondering how long it would take before that started…. 4-6 bolts and you are gone. Now there will be lower unit lock bolts…

Anyone want to start a startup?

I've heard of folks stealing props, but to carry the whole lower unit? You gotta have some cajones!
