How to determine valuation on older (collector) firearms?

My FIL wasn't big on stocks and bonds, preferring to invest in guns and ammo.

When he passed away, I was tasked with the responsibility for liquidating what I can, for as much as I can, as my MIL is 84, has Alzheimers, and is going to need more care than my wife and I can provide.

I've moved some of the basic stuff, but I have a few that I think may be worth more to collectors than what shows up in the Gun Digest Modern Firearm Catalog.

For example, one 1911 has a serial number that Colt shows as being issued in 1916, "United States Property" on the frame, etc.. From what I've seen, it's a valuable piece. However, at some point in the last 105 years, it has been chromed (I'm assuming it wasn't issued that way, but could be mistaken), and it has antler grips, as opposed to standard issue.

How do I determine the price on something like that? Just put it up for auction and see what I draw? I think Colt has some way to track provenance, but I haven't investigated too far into that yet.

Trying to make sure I get everything I can for it, but, at the same time, don't want to be holding out for an unrealistic price, based on the fact that I'm ignorant.

Any direction would be appreciated!

Talk to Mike Cook at Cook - Winston in Boerne, he can give you some ideas on value and is trustworthy.

Post them up. You will probably get a true valuation and maybe a sale too.

I buy my guns through him, those that were tragically lost in a flood of course.
