If you can wait til Jan 6th that's when the DSC Convention is and you can talk to more professionals than you can imagine.

The place we booked with in South Africa is $3400 for the wife & I. That's 7 days of lodging & meals, 2:1 hunting and includes 7 plains game animals. Kudu, impala, warthog, mountain reedbuck.

I also recommend going to the DSC and visiting with outfitters. I went 3 years in a row before I picked the outfitter. I didn't know it until talking to some of them, but high fence places of 3k-5k acres with stocked game are common in Africa. If I wanted to do that, I could stay in Texas

So go to South Africa, take 7 animals on 7 days or go to South Texas and shoot 1/5th of a 200 inch whitetail.

Anyone been to Namibia? Looks like I'm heading there next year and this thread looks like a good one to piggyback on.

It easy to get flights, first class accommodations, multiple animals, taxidermy, shipping for $10k

Also trying to learn the ins/outs as I'm planning trip to S Africa next May. I'm budgeting $12K to include tips. Will only shoulder mount 1 or 2 animals, will do European on rest--figuring 5-7 animals for 10 days. Going with Limcroma Safaris . . . was invited to go so it wasn't a choice for outfitter. Any input would be appreciated.

I've been hunting with Limcroma before. Great outfit. Great accommodations, great people, and the location is truly in the bushveld. You'll enjoy it. It's a great intro into SA.

Nothing compares - book an elephant and buff for good measure but Kudu and some random animal will get in your noggin and make you go back again so start now

Namibia is great. Been several times. Flights into Windhoek are easy. The city is much safer than Johannesburg as is the country in general. Generally plains game in the kalahari area and elephant/buff in the caprivi. Great sight seeing along the coast. Easy to get to Botswana from there.

Have a friend about to go on his 14th trip, I believe to Namibia. Game room at his ranch has a number of mounts from his trips.

Also highly recommend CVS safaris. Been a few times with them. They are the oldest outfitter in SA . They will take good care of you and give you an authentic safari experience.

Beware the bait and switch from some of the guides over there. We recently had a S.A. safari trip gifted to us through an auction by a friend who couldn't use the trip. It advertised all sorts of relatively affordable options at first and then the local dude announced he wouldn't take us out unless we committed to another $30K or so in costs. We had already purchased airfare and everything. Definitely negotiate out the specifics prior to committing to the time and travel.

I would agree that the DSC is a good option for qualified referrals. I have family that have been over more than 10 times with different guides form that pool alone and almost all of them come back every year.

I have always wondered about the true P&L of these types of events. I can't imagine the crew costs all that much.

I once had a co-worker whose Dad lived through the tail end of the Soviet occupation of Poland and he would laugh and laugh about the rise of the "wild boar hunts." He always viewed them as pretty low-rent, hillbilly stuff his Dad and some of the other folks in his small town would get up to on the weekends. Suddenly not too long after the Wall came down, American and European hunters were paying significant sums for guides not to different from his Dad's buddies to lead them on "Polish Wild Boar Hunts." They had to eventually pay up a bit for catering and post-hunt meals.

South Africa may be a different story though.
