Lightweight jacket w best combo of waterproofing and breathability?

I'm looking to buy some lightweight rain jackets for deep sea fishing this spring break in Destin which would also be good to pack for summer hikes in Colorado.

I know you can't get truly waterproof and breathable, so I'm thinking waterproof enough to hold up to a 30 min shower.

I'm willing to spend up a bit on myself, but would prefer some more budget-minded options for my teenage sons, since they will likely outgrow them in a year or two.

Should I just go with Frog Toggs for the boys?

FJ, Adidas, Taylormade, and Under Armor make some great golf weather gear that is somewhat breathable. The Footjoy stuff is the best, buts it's pricey.

FroggToggs has some good options but check out the Columbia website. They've frequently got some good stuff on sale.

Check out the Helium jacket from Outdoor Research. It is extremely light in weight, yet still waterproof and breathable.

Whatever you buy, get it larger so your boys can layer underneath. It can get pretty chilly on the ocean in March. Once it gets too small to layer something underneath, your boys can use them an additional year as a warm weather rain jacket.

Even better would be something made out of Gore Windstopper fabric. However, a jacket of this type will most likely be more than what you would like to spend.

As you mentioned waterproof and breathable aren't really a thing and in humid environments it really doesn't work at all. Look for something with the under arm zippers to open up and allow air flow. I have hiked through a down poor on a humid mid 50's day and stayed pretty comfortable because of the "pit zip's" allowing air to flow and strike a balance between staying dry and not sweating out the jacket from underneath.

Kuiu jackets have some permeability specs on their rain gear if not mistaken

100% frogtogs. Light, packs down and waterproof. Most of all won't break the bank.

I've had this Filson for about a year now. Not too heavy for summer and covers layers in winter.

I have Frogtogs and Duckdri, would recommend both. If you could get snagged on something like branches I would choose Duckdri

If someone recommends a $200 rain jacket when asked for a budget minded option what is the recommendation if someone wants to go high end? I say this in all seriousness as someone who didn't even know what Filson was before OB.

Good rain gear is exceptionally expensive

I just ordered one on Amazon $59.95 with free shipping. Reviews are great...needed new jacket to take to Philmont this summer. Thanks!!

Choose carefully with Columbia stuff...one year I bought a lightweight jacket for one of my boys that was labelled waterproof. It was anything but...

My older Columbia jacket has worked fine on backpacking and canoe trips. I'll have to see if this one is any good. I figured for the cost I would give it a shot.

I have a Northface Apex Flex Gortex that is absolutely bomb proof. They'll sometimes be on Steep and Cheap for around $100.

Definitely NOT frogg toggs.

Arcteryx.

Agree with the PreCip suggestion, just be aware that they aren't all that breathable.

Looks like someone needs to lay off the chili.

All of that packaging material is true but the breathable part which is a lie. I have this same one and i have owned it for years with no issues. The good news is it sounds like you could be out $200 instead of $20.

He didn't ask for "good rain gear" he asked for budget minded. I personally have the an older Simms Guide rain/wading jacket that was like $400 almost 10 years ago and it's still going strong with a couple small patches from where it got punctured.

But for kids who are still growing and will only need light-duty on a budget, my 10-year old (yes, he wears adult M) has been really happy with this one from Columbia: https://www.columbia.com/p/mens-glennaker-lake-rain-jacket-1442361.html?dwvar_1442361_color=040&pos=3

I also bought several of these Frogg Toggs UltraLite jackets and keep some on the boat and others in our blind bags in case of an emergency need or some dumbass forgets their gear and they've held up quite well: https://www.froggtoggs.com/frogg-toggsr-ultra-lite-rain-jacket-4748

Regardless of whether or not I can afford it I find it hard to pay $200+ for rain gear that will likely used 3-4 times before it's outgrown just on general principle.

I read it that he was needing something and his boys were needing something.

I made a suggestion based on my opinion of a good jacket he could buy for himself that I've personally used. He can decide if it's worth it or not. Lol, I'm not making him buy it

That was the first time they were worn. New in the package.

They did work well as extra pipe wrap after busting.

If it doesn't say GoreTex just assume it's not waterproof, windproof, or breathable regardless of what the manufacturer claims.

For the boys your best bet is to sacrifice breathable. Wind/waterproof can be had relatively cheap

Outdoor Research. Don't even second guess it.

Ferrosi for cutting the wind.

Helium or any of their rain gear.

Of sun mountain is still making outer wear that's what I'd do....
I use it fishing and golfing...great waterproof and wind block...plus not hot to help golf

Might be worth flipping through Gordy and Son's sale section. They can get pretty aggressive with markdown when they want something gone.

That was certainly true 25 years ago but that technology is public domain now. Lots of similar fabrics now.

I have an Orvis jacket which works well, and some Henri Lloyd ones which work better for heavy rain - not as breathable, but not terrible. What about some light wool shirts, and just accept getting wet?

Thanks for all the input. I was going to pull the trigger on the Sitka Nimbus linked above but they didn't have any larges. I ordered a Marmot Precip for myself and got a couple Columbia Glennaker Lakes jackets for the boys on sale for less than $30. I'm probably going to buy some Frogg togg suits as well since I want them to have the pants and they're so dang cheap for the whole suit.

Frogg togg pants are clutch when you need them. If rain/wet is 100% in your near future, the $20 pullover pants are worth every penny.

I use the froggytogg ultra lites for backpacking. They work great and the whole suit is less than 1lb, but they won't last long if be used in rough conditions.

I have a columbia duck hunting rain jacket that has an msrp of $200 but has been on sale on their website for $100 for several months (&I think still is) and I feel like Achilles fighting Scamander everytime I put that thing on.
