if you get an aftermarket spout you can drill a small hole on the opposite of the can for a vent and pour twice as fast.then just plug it up with some chewed bubble gum

I want a can like my dad had in the 80s. Bendable spout, vent, pour.
See my post above from Tractor Supply. Exactly what you need for converting any of the plastic cans into that. You might need to add a vent hole to you can but that's an easy mod.

Can't beat LC Jugs. I like them better than VP because of the handle on the bottom.

Lot's of good feedback here. None of the 5 gal cans are options to keep on the boat. The little Suzuki holds .25gal of fuel which provides 35min of run time at full throttle. I like to have extra gas on board in case I get caught out on the lake with a problem (ripped sail, no wind, etc). The aforementioned 1 gal can stays in the compartment under the seat in the cockpit which is pretty limited in height and width. Not going to get a 5 gal can in there. I had a Tohatsu 6hp that ran on an external tank on my other larger sailboat. The little sailboat isn't set up for that because there's no passthru from the the compartment through the hull to the motor but I suppose I could drill one.

I think I'm going to get a larger can, maybe with an electric or mechanical transfer pump that stays at the dock that I can use for refills at the dock. I will keep the small can on board and try to find a replacement nozzle that doesn't leak like hell in case I need to refill away from the dock. I've never had the refill on the lake before and hopefully won't ever have to.

Rule 1 on the little sailboat

I've had more complicated and expensive conundrums in my short time as a sailor. Here's the 23' sailboat after the flood two years ago....

Sorry, but I just gotta say it. Get rid of the damn blow boat and get you something that burns some carbon and you would have these logistical problems.

I have a couple of Scepter cans and they work great, but they're bigger than you need.

Rotopax are another option.

I have10 of them on the ranch. Never had one leak or tip over. Did not buy the cheap ones at Buckee' s.

Oh I have one of those too for windless days and getting somewhere quick. It's a cool sensation though when the wind fills the sails and you're silently cutting through the waves at 5kts.

This. They cost more but work. I have never had one leak or break and we mistreat the hell out of them in our ranch trucks. They get plow bits and digging bars thrown on them all day long.
The bottom handle is nails.

Pricy but that's nifty. I like that its tied down and can't roll out of the compartment when the boat is heeled over.

Yeah hold on to that thing. They don't make 'em like that anymore.

Why not just use a shaker siphon and pinch clip, and not deal with trying to pour out of a can?

Reading more about your issue .. im wondering if a battery filler jug might work better than any gas can. If you've never used one of these things, theres a spring loaded valve in the spout. Nothing comes out until you put the spout in the tank fill and press down. It stops automatically before it overflows. Made for filling batteries but don't see why it wouldn't work for gas.

This is an excellent idea. Overflowing the little quart tank on the outboard is part of the problem. This has some promise. Thanks!

Uh, I don't think that's the way your manual says you should dock your sailboat.

Took a 500 year flood to put it there and a crane to get it down again. Some of my neighbors had a lot worse.

Seems like everyone used that insurance money to get new Nautiques. You should just give in to the peer pressure and get a $100k boat like the rest of LBJ.

Ok... Just Rite makes a 1 gallon and a 2.5 gallon option. They're not cheap, but they seal tite and are easy to pour without spilling all over the place.

I wonder how many hundreds of thousands of gallons of gas has been spilled on the ground and into the water on account of the environmentally friendly gas can spouts?

Great job guys.
