My 10+ year old BGE has developed a hairline crack that runs from the base up the side makes a left turn about 6 inches below the lip of the Egg and stops. Anyone know how to fix this problem? THANKS!

Email them and get them to replace it.

I've heard that if you don't know what a Monarch caterpillar looks like, they won't replace it free of charge.

What Log said - should be a warranty item (unless you bought used or from unauthorized dealer).

AggieDent: Going to try JB Weld Extreme Heat, and NO monarch butterfly caterpillars will be killed during the course of this repair!!!!!

Is your BGE on a wood patio/deck or around any other surface that is flammable? If so, I would very much advise against anything other than getting a warranty replacement (if possible) or just buying something new. If that base gives way while you're doing a cook around anything flammable (JB Weld or not), could be a really bad day.

My $0.02 anyway.

" Due to the expansion and contraction of ceramic components during heat cycles, hairline cracks, crazing or surface cracks may appear, which is normal for ceramic materials, and will not result in warranty coverage unless accompanied by a loss of structural integrity or breakage."

From their warranty.

Tell BGE you've been researching pellet grills and are thinking about pulling the trigger on one unless they replace it.

Or should I say, pulling the TRAEGER on one.

Primos warranty sucks. You have a better chance of Getting money deposited into your bank from that Nigerian prince than you do getting primo to cover anything. The warranty manager that runs it barely speaks the queens English and is a real pain in the neck to deal with. It's not the same warranty quality or service they originally had.

I was worried that ever since the original owner retired and sold the company that it would go downhill. Thankfully, I have yet to need to use the warranty under the new company but am worried it'll be miserable if I ever do.

Thanks for all of the replies, in answer to some:

1. It is only used out side, sits on a fire resistant base, on a wooden Egg table.
2. Warranty: My best guess is that it is 14 to 15 years old, no way I can produce record of purchase.
3. Shoulda bought a Primo, there were no other ceramic grills around when I got the egg.

Gunna give the JB Weld a shot, perhaps it is just surface cracking, have not pulled the firebox to see if it penetrates the entire outside.

Understand your position. My only concern with JB Weld (which I think is a great product) would be offgassing at temperature and either taste or safety implications for the food. Have never heard of anyone using it in a cooker.

This is the only redeeming quality. My issue was that I had to take apart my heavy stand, and while I was careful on install using anti seize on stainless screws, they still hung tight and stripped those pressed threaded rivets.

The warranty guy was a huge deek and after about 30 phone calls to various people they finally agreed to replace the one piece. That's all I was asking for. Not the whole damn stand. Anyway, they then told me it was backorderd and they'd send it when it was in. Finally they said they were shipping it to my address.

That was March. Still haven't received it and I have since cut out the rivet and bought new stainless screws and a tool to press a new rivet in. It's good as new now but I was pretty irritated that for what you spend on these damn ceramic grills they nickel and dime you on warranty.

Well, I was only ribbing the OP a little. All in good fun.

But now you had to go and add tot 2020 bad news folder (it's getting way too full!).

Sorry to hear Primo's warranty has nose dived. I have an XL and love it. They still have the founder/original owner and his success story video on their website. They should take that down if he sold. Who bought the company? Still made in USA?

For what it's worth, it would have been no issue if I didn't have to move my Primo. It would have been assembled and not messed with it's whole life. You could even argue that it's my fault for disassembling it
So...just bear that in mind that if I had not messed with it, it wouldn't have been an issue.

I'd say to give them a call to find out before you do anything. Seriously, what do you have to lose? If they tell you you're out of luck, then you're right where you are right now.

Do you remember if you registered it or not? I know when I got my KJ, I registered it on their website and they had me put in the serial number of the cooker. When we moved, the fire box got a crack in it, and they sent me a new one with no questions asked.

Cracks in ceramics can be really hard to fix with just an adhesive. The tip of the crack is just so small and the ceramic material just doesn't have any toughness to keep the crack from propagating.

I've never looked into ceramic grills repair specifically, but for fixing any ceramic or composite that is cracking you need to drill a hole at the end of crack tips. That will stop the crack from propagating. Then you can commence with whatever method you wanted for sealing it back up.
