I have no personal experience with ceramic or pellet, although I know others that love them both. Only down side to pellet is that you can't fire grill on it... if there are options now that has that feature, that would be great!

I do have experience cooking briskets on both an electric smoker and a gas smoker. While the electric is really easy, and the finished product looks great with good bark, etc, it will never have a smoke ring and never quite tastes as good as a real smoked brisket. The gas on the other hand produced a great brisket. Great bark, great smoke ring, great smoke flavor, just as good as a real pit smoked brisket. The gas was slightly more of s pain because to cook at a lower temp, it wasn't enough heat to make the chips smoke, so I had to constantly play with the temp. I am sure there are newer models that makes that easiest.

my electric does make great easy to make jerky though. Anyway, just my 2 cents.

Masterbuilt has a new one out now with a charcoal hopper and built in probe temp controls with blue tooth. I've only seen it online but looks like Home Depot stocks them. Very inexpensive relative.

I think I might be on my last year with my Akorn. I think I've had it 7 years. I'm abusive to it and it gets 3 uses a week over that period. I think it stacks up to the other kamados otherwise. I haven't looked at any other reviews to see if this is common.

Any grill or smoker that has a gadget on it makes me nervous but I think with the whole life thing I know it'll help keep food out of the oven. I laughed at the title. I'm asking the same questions to myself.

Check out the Hasty Bake Charcoal "Ovens"... I bought one while I was living in Tulsa (where they are made) about 10 years ago and haven't looked back..I can grill, smoke or bake by raising or lowering the firebox..

I'm finishing up first year with my $500 Masterbuilt gravity smoker and it's thrown down some great BBQ plus seared steaks in that time. Highly recommend... Bang for the buck is off the charts
