When I was a kid there was a catfish farm off of 290 and fry, about where the Lowe's is now, if I recall correctly, where you'd pay by the lb of the fish you caught. Do these operations still exist anywhere anymore. Was thinking about it today and how I'd love to take my boy to one. Living in LA I'm sure there isn't one here but would to find one in the greater Houston area and/or Georgetown area for when we come home to see the grandparents.

There are several in Texas, but I believe Mississippi and Alabama have a greater concentration of them.

There used to be one at the corner of FM 484 and FM 306 on the north side of Canyon Lake. It was called The Fishing Corner or something like that. Not sure if it's still open or not. I just don't get to that part of the world anymore.

Catfish farms?!

No. This is just high fenced fishing.

It's called fee fishing in the industry and a lot of them buy from the actual culture farms to stock their ponds, retail on the fin as it were.

When I was a kid in Knoxville, TN, we'd hit up a place like this called the Crosseyed Cricket. They had a catfish pond and a rainbow trout pond. You would catch some fish, bring them to the counter in a bucket, then go into the restaurant to eat "your catch."

Trashy as hell, but fun as a kid.

He is taking a KID fishing. Would you rather have the kid playing video games?

I took my daughter to the one on 290 and quickly spent $90 on catfish. Went back another time and got skunked. That takes talent to get skunked at a fish farm.

I went to that same one on 290 with my dad and grandfather as a kid. I was probably only 8-9 years old so mid 90s.

Honestly, there are some really good bayous and neighborhood lakes for fishing. I grew up fishing bayous and lakes and caught some really nice fish. Just throw hotdogs on a treble hook off the bottom of bacon/hotdogs on a bobber and you'll find catfish or perch.

If you really want to wow your son, look into a trip to Moody Ranch in Navasota. It's not that expensive and you'll catch as many bass as you want.

Fisherman's Corner

Still alive and just reopened after their closed season of November to February. Not very cheap though. $6.99 per pound whole. They do filleted and bagged in ice free. $5.99 for a pole rental and you have to purchase their bait.

Brings back some memories. My great grandfather lent the money to a local guy in small town in MS to open one of these (lent it interest free) so we got to fish there at no charge but we usually put the fish back. He had some monster cats in there, really only about 3-5 lbs, for a kid of 8-10 years old they were monsters. Good times.

I'm pretty sure you, and apparently at least 8 others, missed some sarcasm there.

There was one at 290 and 6 in Hempstead. I went a couple of times, and never caught anything. Might be why it closed.

Thanks for mentioning this. My dad leased that ranch for hunting and fishing most of childhood, had no idea it was a commercial operation now. I'll take my kids there this year just to see the place again!

I can give you a lot of places to fish with hotdogs under a bobber that will get a bite. Or fish off the TCD with tiny hooks and bits of shrimp.

We used to go to a Catfish/Christmas Tree farm as a kid somewhere near Mauriceville as a kid. We would come home with a Christmas tree and about 20 lbs of catfish at Christmas time.

And you'll have a blast! I'm trying to coordinate a trip out there with my oldest later this spring.
