I recently added a wonderful new rifle to my collection, a used Winchester Model 70 .243 Lightweight. I love old .243s as I grew up watching my grandfather hunt with my great grandfather's custom mauser action .243. When I found a this one that came with the original stock, a synthetic m70 stock, and a youth wood stock I couldn't pass it up. It may become my 8 year old son's rifle until he can carry the weight of Marlin 336 30-30 that will be passed to him as the 3rd generation to hunt with it.

My issue is it has rings mounted to it that I have tried to remove, but they aren't moving. I would like to add a set of rings but can't find the proper ones that fit. I have tried Leupold std and dual dovetail rings but none will fit inside the bases. What rings can I purchase that will fit? (Likely mounting a Leupold VX2 4-12 40MM)

Also who is the recommended gunsmith in central DFW to help me bed the stock(s)? also need to bring my grandfather's mauser and have his warped stock redone or replaced as it's making contact with his barrel.

Many years ago I bought a Rem. 700 that had those exact same bases. Gunsmith said they were older Burris bases that were obsolete.
I just took them off the action and added standard Leupold bases. Mounting holes were the same.
If the mounting screws were Lock -Tited you may need to carefully heat them to get them out.
I don't live in DFW area so can't recommend a gunsmith.

OP, shared your post with my dad.

He suggested they may be Conetrol bases out of Seguin.

Or maybe S&K.

For delicate work like that,,,the tip of soldering iron on the screw head can work, Has to be a good soldering iron with a good thermostat. Just in case you ever need to remove small screws in a delicate spot

Put some heat on the screws.

Let me try a soldering iron tonight. I will likely replace with some leupold base / rings that are integrated to make it easy.

Has to be one that can regulate itself, cause you will have to hold it to screw for 2 minutes minimum

The next step up would be to use a micro torch....you know the tiny butane ones that throw out that small blue flame.

If you want to protect the surrounding woodwork. Go to autozone and either get some exhaust wrap or heat shield

Poke a hole in the wrap or shield right where you need to put the flame.. that way you use fire but dont damage surrounding wood or finish.

I've used heat gel but that just makes a mess.

Heat shield example. No need to remove the sticky backing. Just cut a small hole where you need it
