My mom is wanting is to buy my dad a pole saw but she isn't sure if it should be battery or gas powered.
They live on 13 acres and dad can't stand a tree with low hanging limbs.
Suggestions?
And i did the search and googled but the OB knows all.

Does he own any battery equipment yet? 18+V, 40V ect.? Match that if so. If not, get gas.

Battery Stihl sure is convenient.

I have an echo gas pole saw that works great. Wish I bought battery now.

See the thread on Milwaukee tools - they have a cordless pole saw. As others have said, if he already has some battery operated tools try to stay with same brand/battery size for consistency. If not give Milwaukee a look

Battery if not a heavy user. Much easier to maintain, less mess, and much lighter

I've got the Harbor Freight battery pole saw. The battery will outlast me in a day.

I suggest a hydraulic one attached to a self-propelled pruning tower. Squirts a tiny amount of hydraulic oil on the chain periodically to keep it lubed, it's a nice touch.

A buddy that hunts with me had a Kobalt battery pole saw at the ranch earlier this year. I was impressed by the darn thing. I am getting one at some point. I am not sure on the brand just yet. It did everything we needed in a day and never ran out of juice. We weren't doing massive jobs, but cleaning around several stands and feeders.

I've been using the hell out of this Greenworks 40 volt unit for the past 15 months.

Greenworks 40 Volt Pole Saw

After renting a Stihl gas-powered unit (which beat me up after a full day of use), I was very skeptical about whether a battery-operated chain saw could do the job. I'm a skeptic no more. I'm sold.

This thing has been absolutely great cleaning up along fence lines on some properties I own, as well as pruning oak trees around my home.

Out of the box it's just under 9' long. But, I bought a couple of 2-1/2' extender poles and it reaches way up to just about anything I need to cut. This model actually has the sections screw together, rather than having a couple of telescoping sections.

Technically, Greenworks says only to use one extender pole, but after reading an Amazon review where the guy had used two with no problem, I gave it a try and it works just fine, as long as you have the strength not to let a 14' long tool get away from you.

It comes with a 2ah battery, which is plenty to drop a bunch of limbs. As you can imagine, it takes a whole lot more time and effort to cut up what you drop, than it does to drop them!

Oh, I've still got a manual 25' pole saw, but it doesn't get much use these days. Thank goodness.

I own a postage stamp in Dallas County with two trees these days. When I used to own more I'd have gotten the good out of either. Based on the acreage and your dad's attitude I'd say gas all the way. And I hate owning small engines.

This would be an options the saw disconnects so you can use as just a saw. Cut the limb with a poll and finish it by hand

I have the Greenworks battery pole saw.

In one heavy day of use, I used 1/2 of the battery. I was worn out long before the battery.

I use a plug in electric type on acreage, but I also have some power runs to places on my property and a portable generator. It has plenty of power to cut limbs up to a few inches diameter with an 8" blade.

What's the length on these battery powered version? Do they extend out as far as the commercial side of the gas powered counterparts?

I have an adjustable battery powered Ryobi that works fantastic. It's adjustable from 10 to 15ft. Battery lasts a good while, but I carry multiple batteries when I'm going to be using it a lot.

Gas for anything yard related. Lugging around and untangling extension cords is a major PIA.

I'd say get a battery one. If he has too large of a project, rent a gas one. Unlikely he'd use a gas one enough to keep it in good shape, unless he tends to spend a great deal of time pruning.

What? We are talking battery not cord powered.

My dad has the battery operated pole saw and regular saw. Both work great for the few times he uses them.

Neither. Go for a Stihl PP 800. It has an aggressive blade and the best locking pole I've ever used. I raced a guy with a pole chain saw, and my manual cut through limbs faster. He may also appreciate not having the weight of a chainsaw.

It'll run you $200 and it's worth every penny. I use it A LOT on my ranch.

In that case, no brainer. Those batteries wear out within a year or so.

I have a Stihl gas powered pole saw. Does a great job but that mother will wear you out!

I have two Echo gas pole saws and they work great. I'm not quite sure why a gas one would be a bad thing? I can't imagine that the electric ones are as robust as the gas ones. Maybe if you only have a few small jobs here and there?

No they won't. You are thinking a decade ago. Now batteries last longer then a gas motor, especially if you are using ethanol gas in it. Again if moderate use you will be fine.

If you are cutting twice a week go gas. Once a week? Or once every two weeks? Not a problem

But does the electric have the same amount of power? I had read a lot of good reviews about the Stihl battery powered pole saws but when I went to the dealer they told me that the electric saws did not have the power of the gas ones. So I ended up with a gas one. Liked it so ended up buying another one. I was a little reluctant on the electric as I've had some nice cordless drills where the batteries crap out after several years and I could not easily find the replacement batteries.

The battery powered ones are not as powerful as the gas ones.

But, they're lighter and I've had no trouble going through a 6 inch oak or ash tree limb with mine. Other than letting the saw rest on top of the branch, there was no effort involved.

For the average homeowner, it is all you will need.

I've got the kolbalt 40v saw. I've never had any issues with it and will run all day trimming low hanging limbs on my land.

I just bought a bare (no battery) 20v Dewalt pole saw for $117 on Amazon. Will use this weekend. Will report back

Yep, if you are using that crappy ethanol gas, run it dry after each use.

Or treat the gas.
