So some of us, over 45, have a few extra pounds hanging around.

For those of you with some dunlap, do you concealed carry? I have thought about a boot holster or something similar, but not sure how pleasant that would be. Any larger guys concealed carry?

Also, if you do, do you sit more or stand more during the day?

Over 45, not much extra around the waist. But I conceal easily in the 3 o'clock position. I find it the most comfortable sitting or standing.

That said, my arms can hand straight down without hitting anything.

First, is the weight mostly abdominal or is it more distributed? I am in my 60s and despite working out for almost all my adult life, gravity is gradually sending fat downwards to that area. I wear an oversized tunic shirt (just Van Heusen or other popular brand) to hide my carry guns and will wear on occasion a concealed carry vest. Yes, it is a dead giveaway for the observant, but works in both summer and in cold weather when my jacket is off. A lot also depends on the type of weapon you carry.

BTW, I noted that the security agents assigned to Israeli PM Netanyahu have a near ideal cover system for warm weather:

Note their cover garments are short sleeve shirts unbuttoned while the politicians are obviously in coat and tie.

And I would bet large that Benji is carrying his own as well.

LA Police Gear stocks a 3XL shirt for the following which might be a good option, or at least give some ideas for warm weather coverup:

I would tend to favor the outer shirt option rather than a vest per se.

How about getting rid of the girth. I lost 45lbs between 8/17 and 9/18. Slow burn over time yields major results. Not only did Concealed Carry get much easier and more comfortable, damn near everything in life got better as well. I'll be 45 next year. 45 is young. I used to think 40 was old

I wear Duluth trading jeans, and their pockets are deep enough and durable enough for me to easily pocket carry my Sig P938 in a pocket holster.

Sneaky Pete makes these holsters that don't look like holsters and generally don't garner much notice except from people who also carry. This works well for me when I'm wearing scrubs, as it clips to my waistband.

+1 Also dropped a lot of weight this year by, among other things, intermittent fasting. I could carry a gun IWB now just to help keep my pants up! It used to be really uncomfortable before but now it and everything else is so much easier.

I hear ya. I am down 25 pounds since I tried to start losing weight, but I have recently hit a stall, where I think I need a workout that burns more calories. Repeating my same 15 mile bike ride more nights a week, doesn't seem to get me any further.

I have thought about swimming, as that really drops the pounds off me. I also have a weight machine in the garage I could get on some, that I bought for my HS son a few years ago. I guess I need to mix in some of that.

Either way, I would like to be back to a flat enough stomach that I could fit a normal CC rig easily. I wear lose fishing shirts to work most days, so it wouldn't take much more weight loss to get them to hide the weapon.

I am a year or two away from 50, and your body stubbornly refuses to lose weight when you get older and older, so I am sure it will be exponentially harder to lose at 55, if I don't get it off soon. I'm working on it, but would also like the option to CC on occasion, in the meantime.

25 pounds heck yeah. I would look into intermittent fasting as well. It's not a diet.

Thanks bud, but, not as difficult as you'd think. Here's the cheat code. Whole food, plant based diet. It's hard to promote on a board like this and admittedly hard to conceive, but, once I jumped in feet first the results were immediate and sustained. A year later the weight is still gone and I enjoy what I eat now as much as I did before. I don't call myself a Vegan because I still eat things on rare occasions, but, my baseline is Plants.

Do it for 2 weeks and by the end of the first, you'll be turning that 15 mile ride into 30 because you have so much energy. By the end of the second week, you'll be sold.

*edit* I practice intermittent fasting as well. I don't eat for 14-15 hrs a day. Usually from 7PM-9to10AM.

I'll duck for cover now

Yeah, I'm a lot chunkier than I'd like to be, but a small automatic (Springfield XDS 3.3 9mm) fits quite nicely IWB right where the tag on my Wranglers is. I think it'd be uncomfortable at 3 o'clock against my hipbone, but at 4:30 to 5:00. it hits a nice spot where I can wear a seat belt and it doesn't interfere. It also doesn't press hard against the seat back.

Been riding the bike, cutting back on sweets...not losing a lot, but I ordered a new gun belt today because I'm on the last notch of as tight as the present one will go.

I'm in the same boat: whole-food-plant-based (as much as I can) with intermittent fasting. You can be vegan or vegetarian and still eat a lot of processed junk food under that label. Once you focus on eating better, your tastes will change. The old mantra of exercise more and restrict calories is fake news. Inevitably you'll let off the gas and gain the weight back if you stick to the standard American diet. The dark side is that you will begin to notice more and more how overweight and uncomfortable everyone looks.

Thanks for the encouragement and advice fellas. I am still working on it and will continue to do so. 4:30 location may be key, until I can get more pounds off.

WTG to the fellas above that have dropped pounds.

At one time I was a very large man. I found going to an OWB carry option helped tremendously. I had to push it back to 3:30-4:00 position so I got holsters with FBI cant to angle the gun forward a bit. It's about the only viable option. SOB carry us no good for anything larger than a .380 due to weight of the gun wrenching the holster over and printing badly. Ankle carry is near useless due to access. Shoulder holsters are an option but I don't like that many point the gun straight rearward, muzzling god knows what while you roam around all day. Also that has to be concealed with an open garment for accessibility.

Another option are som "carry" shirts have Velcro pockets behind the shirt pocket for quick access to a micro pistol. It's something.

Look into an OWB FBI can holster. The one thing about Dunlop disease is a full size pistol tends to blend right in under an untucked shirt! So carry your hog leg!

Thank you for the reminder why I put you on ignore. To bad the show post option was even there. I see your math is as bad as your culinary advice.

227-183=44. I actually got down to 178 when I was marathon training and fully expect to get there again as I train for #2

You are seriously a loser. Do everyone a favor and put me on ignore as well or leave completely since you have no ag tag anyway.

Not sure what math I got wrong... I'm the first to say my math skills are less than stellar but I didn't even do any math in my post so maybe someone can help me understand that criticism.

And no I'm not an Ag. I went to Sam Houston State because when you want to major in Criminal Justice and you're in the southern US, that's where you want to go. I've always been an Aggie in spirit though and still love the University like it was my own alma mater.

My point stands though. You criticize people for their lives and choices they make because they are not your life or choices instead of actually trying to help people with their questions. So go suck a taint with your sanctimonious BS.

I'm 49 and chubby. A few months back I started carrying an OWB Kydex holster on my hip and just leaving my shirt untucked. So much better than when I tried to carry in an IWB at small of back. I got one that has the adjustable tilt so I can still get into my front pocket. I sit in my vehicle doing surveillance 8-10 hours a day and it only took me 2-3 days to stop noticing that it was there. I wish I had started carrying like this years ago.

This is a debatable point. Certainly most firearms these days are mechanically safe enough to not be a risk of spontaneous discharge but the issue I'd note is during holstering and unholstering.

The most significant risk of negligent discharge is during holstering a loaded firearm. I personally would much prefer that gun be pointed down than it be parallel to the ground.

Just personal preference though.

He encouraged someone to lose weight and shared his technique. Others did the same in this thread. You apparently followed him here from the food board to talk *****

And for concealed carry in a shoulder holster, how often are you unholstering the pistol? It's not something that has to happen every day. Even if you choose to take it out every day, you can always do it after you take off the shoulder holster.

Not joking. Find the thread on the food board. He hammered me because he doesn't like spicy pasta sauce. Called me an amateur and said my opinion was trash and I should be be disregarded. It was in a thread about "how you make your sauce."

I mean wtf? We've had a number of disagreements since. He continues to berate people for their personal choices as a matter of preference and I keep calling him out. It's gotten to be fun actually. He never fails to screw up.

As someone who's been extremely over weight unsolicited weight loss advice is a severe d!ck move. It's immediate cause to consider the advice giver an *******.

The OP requested help dealing with carrying a handgun considering body shape issues, not how to lose weight.

It is extremely rude to suggest someone lose the weight.

As for the shoulder holster, do as you wish. Like I said in my previous post, I leave zero room for accident due to negligence. I holster and unholster at least once each daily. That is in my home and I'd really rather not rip a round arbitrarily through my bedroom wall going god knows where.

Secondly in the case that I did ever have to draw out in the world, adrenaline is a ***** and can cause you to do strange things like not remove your finger from the trigger guard while trying to reholster. Happens more than you think.

Holster design and choice can mitigate that risk. I know it sounds like mountains of molehills but it's just offered as a point to consider. I'm not saying it's a critical decision point for all.

ETA: oh and I've been an OB member for a VERY long time. Long before dipweed #1 crossed me.
