How long do you want to ignore this user?
My parents are retiring, and building a house on family land in east Texas to be closer to my moms side of the family, and enjoy a more simpler life.

My Uncle and I bench shoot long range (800 yd right now) together at least one weekend a month, as well as deer/pig hunt the 600 acres. He shoots a .270, and I shoot a 6.5 Grendel build that eyeguy hooked me up with.

My dad has not been much of a shooter/hunter. However, he's expressed a lot of interest over the last few weeks, and I'm excited to get to get to share something that I love doing, with him, now that he has more time to dedicate to it.

I say all of this to say, I want to get my dad a badass bolt gun setup that selfishly, both he and I can enjoy as he learns to love shooting longer distance at steel and shooting some deer/pigs within 200yds.

I want his "do all" go-to bolt gun gift from me to be a 6.5 Creedmore. But, I don't want this to be a cookie cutter looking, all black synthetic furniture, stock rifle from Academy. I want to get him a "custom" bolt gun with all the whistles that will be a shooter. Cool barrel/action fluting, patterned walnut stock or badass patterned cerakote synthetic stock, etc. I want this gun to be a great shooter, but I want it to also stand out and be one he loves to show off.

I've checked out accurate ordinance, surgeon, West Texas ordinance... anyone have other recommendations for some great looking and shooting bolt guns? Sparing no expense.

TIA!

Ryan Hoover Firearms/Gunsmith in Fredericksburg, Texas. Great man, very knowledgeable, master machinist, and knows his stuff and builds beautiful rifles that shoot.

Thought about shooting you an email! Honestly, figured that this would be more of a specialty "in house" type deal for more of a gunsmithing/building outfit.. and I mean no disrespect in that I swear! I'll shoot you a note if you have some things in mind..

I'd take a cookie cutter Tikka 6.5 creedmoor over just about any other 6.5 creedmoor

No worries, we haven't been that open about this yet. Behind the scenes type things running right now but yeah... I already have a few things I'm mulling that could be cool.

Will call them tomorrow. Thank you!

Tikkas are awesome.. but I'd also like to support a shop and recommend a name/build to other people. And I know my dad would love to tell that story as much as shooting a top dollar well known build.

Bill Wiseman builds a pretty good actions and barrels. Don't know if he ever got away from synthetic stocks, but his rifles are all built and machined in house. Some of the hexagonal work and fluting he does is amazing.

6mm creed though, but that should be plenty for 800yds

This seems to be what you want for him. People shooting them at long range matches seem to do really well with them too.

Tell me more about the 6.5 Creedmore. Seems to be a popular rifle. What doesn't it most closely resemble? .308? .270? 30-30? Other?

It's the newest latest, greatest thing. Deservingly so. It's a great caliber. Low recoil. High ballistic coefficient.

Closest thing to a 300WM as far as accuracy goes at long range without the kick.

Take a 308, neck it down to 264 and change the shoulder angle. More efficient powder burn with a better ballistic coefficient. Shoots softer but with better ballistics than 308. For Texas, best mass produced caliber out there right now, in my opinion.

I looked at GAPrecision before going with Accurate Ordnance.

No ragrets on my AO Creedmoor.

If I were to build another, and budget was no issue, I'd probably go local-ish and give Horizon a call.

Misread, but I have 2 GA's and couldn't be happier. You know the components are top shelf vs some of the other high end rifle companies that build components in house rely on tv shows and mktg.

Definitely not a slam on GA in any way. I had AO put together a barreled action and trigger for me and I did the rest to save some coin.

If budget at the time had been enough for a full GA build, I probably would have gone that route.

I mis read and thought you had chosen to GA and had to edit. No offense taken whatsoever.

Why wait for a GA when they have some realllllly nice ones in stock:

Those Model 7 6.5 Creeds are super do-it-all guns. Carry to hunt, bench to shoot, you name it.

That said, you could buy a Tikka CTR, save $2,700, and not miss a beat.

A little off topic, but it was something I mentioned in my OP. For those of you running some crazy fluted barrels.... any performance issues in terms of a shift in POI or repeatability in MOA accuracy?

Some folks swear the cooling helps, some are telling me fluting messes with the harmonics and should be completely avoided.
BCStalk
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have a fluted 6.5 CM and Grendel and haven't had any issues.
PFG
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I would anticipate that if you take a current rifle and flute the barrel, it may change point of impact. But no - once re-zerored - absolutely no performance issues or further POI shifts or problems with accuracy. Fluting doesn't take off that much meat.

Not custom but semi-custom, Sauer, (est 1751), parent company of SigSauer, part of Mauser / Blaser group, USA headquarters in San Antonio. The S 404 starts at $4k and can add custom engraving:

Also make $50K shotguns: https://www.gunsinternational.com/guns-for-sale-online/shotguns/sauer-shotguns/j-p-sauer-best-quality-over-under-410.cfm?gun_id=101094195

My son has their entry level 100 Classic XT in 6.5 CM, easily shoots 1/2 MOA, excellent adjustable 2-4 lb trigger, slick action, 60 deg bolt, factory bedded, Ergo-Max stock reduces recoil, less the $900.

This. Buy one for each of you, plus nice scopes, and have money left for ammo.
