Y'all must attract dumbs***s to y'all. I've been to public ranges a lot and don't recall noticing anything I felt unsafe about.
Or maybe you're the guy being unsafe everyone else is telling stories about.

If you are ever at American shooting center at George Bush Park, look up at the roof while at the firing line. So many bullet holes from idiots. It's amazing that more accidental shooting don't happen at public ranges.

If you go back there, walk down to the pistol lanes and look at the bench to see how many rounds have been put through those benches.Satellite of Love said:

It's like that at every range in or outdoor. And this is why their range officers (& all range officers anywhere) are such A-holes to their customers. Cuz if they aren't a-holes and allow people to do dumb stuff, bad things happen very quickly.Satellite of Love said:

This is exactly what I see at the public range I frequent. The Range Officers are sticklers for following the rules, unfriendly and vocal. I don't take it personally. It does keep the idiots (mostly) in line, which is worth it.JSKolache said:

I would be shocked if they didn't carry an umbrella policy in the 8 digit range.MouthBQ98 said:
They are probably insured, but it may not be enough.
As a fellow Katy homie, what range? You can shoot me an email if you'd like.drummer0415 said:
And to reiterate the same point brought by other posters, this is exactly why I joined a private range. I know that I pay a premium for it, but I consider it significantly safer.
Should be more than plenty, holding for type of employment and lost earnings claim. Pure negligence should not result in any punitive damages and they will claim nothing but negligence types causes of action to make sure that the insurance provides coverage.BigPuma said:

Most gun accidents are the result of people who are either uncomfortable with guns or too comfortable with guns.
They should work on their aim then.Irish_Man said:
I go to a public range outside of valley mills and it's been ok. The crowds are almost always small but the range officer can be a dick (which is good) when he wants to be. On the pistol range, there's a wood overhang to keep you from shooting over the berms. The amount of bullet holes in that overhang is incredible.
The private range i go to outside China springs is hit and miss. Some of the ar crowd get a little wild.
I'm a member at the Impactzone which is about 10 miles north of Brookshire. There's 13 shooting bays, during the week there's usually nobody else out there. Weekends there's classes and matches but I've always been able to find a bay to myself.BigPuma said:As a fellow Katy homie, what range? You can shoot me an email if you'd like.drummer0415 said:

This. People that are properly trained, over time, forget that others aren't. Handle a few thousand properly unloaded guns in a row and you begin to forget the basicsMike88Ag said:
In addition to the gun owner, it was a smart 21 year old kid employed by Hot Wells who failed to follow the basic rules of gun safety. From what I've heard, he's a great kid. They'll both live with this for the rest of their lives, but that pales in comparison to what the victim's family will live with. Treat all guns as if they are loaded.

My wife and I were there maybe 15 years ago when that crusty old lady worked the desk. I have heard that she is now passed. A young (late 20s) couple walked in, the woman carrying a semi auto pistol, flat, in the palm of her hand. We were at the front desk checking in and the barrel was aimed straight at us.
The old lady threw a fit. The young woman said, "but it's jammed. That's the problem, it won't fire."
What the old lady said would not make it past the forum filters, but that's the kind of stupidity you can get at a range.
