Heading to Jackson Hole tomorrow for a week. Old college roommate and the wives. Been there multiple times, but always in the summer. Plan to spend a lot of time in Grand Tetons and Yellowstone day hiking. Any suggestions for something we should absolutely do in the fall weather?

I was in Yellowstone in July and left wanting to move there as well.

I was up there over new years 2016 and for the entire first week of 2016 the temps didnt get above -5. At night it was dropping to -30ish. The first couple of days we were there we were snowboarding and at 2pm it was still -15 to -20. They have their brutal moments.

I think we arrived just in time because the house we were at the furnace was on the fritz and when we walked in the house it was 34degrees in the house. Had we not gotten there that week, I'm sure all the pipes would have burst. The Kmart and sears in town didn't sell thermostats either so the whole week we had to constantly mess with the furnace to limp it until someone got out there to fix it.

-40 isn't unusual at all. The lowest I saw was -45 this past winter while we were living in Rock Springs. The wind chill got down to around -60 at one point and it was just brutal for about a two week stretch where temps never got above zero.

As for Jackson in the fall, you really can't go wrong with anything you decide to do. Get out and hike, fish, and take in all the wildlife. Make sure you've got some bear spray with you because the grizzlies are pretty active and you'll probably see some on your hikes or as you're driving through the parks. There isn't a better time to be in Jackson Hole, in my opinion (other than powder days in January).

You actually haven't missed fall colors, been peaking all through this last week here and unless some rain and wind knock all the leaves down the colors are still great. We have already had several snows and about 8k and above have been holding snow consistently for a few weeks now. Crowds are finally down again so it's a great time to visit.

Love Wyoming.......but the winters can be brutal. I lived through 16 winters there between 1981-1997, saw lots of people fall in love with the place after visiting in the summer, move there, and then leave after a couple of winters.
Still wouldn't trade the time we spent there, great place to raise a young family.

My wife and my favorite place in the world. We've been twice in October it will be gorgeous, you should still be able to see yellow leaves on the trees. If you're lucky it will be snowing or have just snowed. Go up the pass to Idaho, nice drive with lots of scenic viewing opportunities. I grabbed a fishing pole at the local grocery store and spent some time on the river while she read. Walking around town enjoying the cold weather you wont feel down this way for months.

I'm not typically an art guy, but there's an art shop, museum, whatever its called across from the Elk preserve that has some fantastic paintings in it.

There's a steakhouse there that is called Gun Barrel, they cook the steak over wood coals its very good. Also a restaurant called Lift is pretty damn good. For breakfast you should try Cafe Genevieve good chicken and waffles.

This guy is very jealous, I hope you enjoy your trip.

I lived there for 10 years, still own a house there and was up there last week. Unfortunately, I spent most of my time working on the house and not actually doing anything.

As for the quick details:
  • You might catch the end of the fall colors
  • Most of the high trails are already covered in snow
  • The best views of the Tetons are from Gros Ventre (pronounced Gro Vaan)
  • If Baker-Ewing is still running it's worth doing one of their scenic float trips. Ask for Grant. He is 3rd generation Jackson Hole and has a forestry degree. He can tell you the entire history and ecology of the area.
  • I like the North end of GTNP to get away from people. Two Oceans Lake Trail near Tommy Guns picture of the Oxbow is a great trail this time of year.

What part of the state did you live in?

We only went through two winters there but I have to admit that I kind of enjoyed them. I was excited anytime it snowed and I was always curious just how far the mercury could fall. My wife on the other hand got over it all pretty fast and she was ready for warm gulf breezes again. The only times that I really didn't like the cold there was in late April and May when you would get wet storms that would lay a blanket of ice on the roads.

11 of the 16 yrs were in Cody. It's not really the cold that gets to you, it's the wind that starts in the fall and doesn't stop till May. The old joke was there's two seasons on Wyoming, winter and the 4th of July (and it has snowed on the annual 4th of July parade).
There were times when we had pipes freeze under our bathroom sink because the north wind would penetrate through the 6 inch insulation. Had to open the cabinet doors to keep the pipes from freezing.
Also would get up every morning to start the wood burning stove to heat the house before the kids woke up. Would burn 4 or 5 cords of wood per winter to supplement the baseboard heat that couldn't keep up. Also the wind would blow so hard you had "whitecaps" in your toilet from the wind blowing over the plumbing vents on the roof creating a suction.

I wanted to go to the mountains when I graduated from A&M and was looking forward to the cold and change. I don't think it really bothered me at all till the end when the winters were just getting too long.

That's awesome! I lived in Rock Springs and my kitchen sink would also freeze up anytime we had a strong north wind and I also remember white caps in the toilet. We made a lot of memories there in a short amount of time.

I second this. I would just add that the actual Brewery is in Alpine Wy. If you don't want to drive down there you can get all of their beers at Thai Me Up on Pearl St.

Thanks for all the suggestions and info - I have a few additional ideas to add to the mix now! I knew I came to the right place.

I have a business trip right after this mini-vacation; but I will try to post pics from this trip later.

Just read through all of your posts, great information.

I'm taking my family of five the first week of Jan. I have two 7 year olds and a 6 year old who have never seen snow until last week in Houston. Ha

We are going to do a Snowcoach in Yellowstone for a day and a half day tour of grand Teton. I got an Airbnb in Wilson.

If anyone has any advice for where to to take the kids when it's 15 degrees out, let me know. We don't ski, but we are looking to do some snow tubing.

Otherwise I'm guessing we will be playing a lot of board games and watching movies.
