You are going to remedy the lack of a gun every single day in the future?

And FYI, I'd have been on the phone with 911 sitting in my truck. Why get out?

A process server would have served right then. They don't want to track you down again. I think it was a case for a robbery. I'd have alarm bells going off.

Stay vigilant and armed.

I would doubt that many robbers know the name of the person who lives at the residence. Also, why would a robber want to give up his identity when suspicions would be raised? I would say this was some person or company trying to track down a name and a picture.

Thinking it was a person turning around or asking for directions slowed my judgement. The vehicle is also very similar to a guy I go to church with who stops by frequently and I thought it could have been him.

I never felt threatened enough during the encounter to warrant pulling a weapon even if I had one on me, I was just confused about the process as it happened. It wasn't until after it was over did I realize how odd it was.

You can easily find out the home owners name from a property record search on the county website.

I do live in a large house right on the edge of town, so it is an ideal target for thieves. My neighbors are relatively close, but we're all on 2-10 acre lots.

I spoke with the non emergency contact at the sheriff's office and I'm going to go in tomorrow to give a statement. It probably won't do much, but at least they'll be a record of something happening.

Next time ....

"No, Jack lives [insert least favorite neighbor address here].

Seriously though, talk to your neighbors...any you know or run across. Make everyone aware so if it happens again people will remember. Never know. Maybe it's happened already. Or maybe you find out your neighbors new slab isn't paid for. Lol.

Is your last name fairly common? Could there have been another Jack "Wagon" or whatever your last name is in the vicinity?

If you don't have a common last name then his story makes even less sense and would worry me a bit more. If you are weirded out enough, to try a few things then maybe google your name and city and see if you get multiple address hits. If there is another person with your name in the area, maybe see if he has a public Facebook account and check his friends photos for the guy. Or even send the guy with the same name a note or try to find a phone number so you can send him a description of this dude to see if he knows anything.

I would take much comfort in him being a terrible criminal if he was indeed there for nefarious purposes.

Not a common last name. The only other person that pops up when I Google my last name and city is my wife and that's because she is a doctor at a local hospital.

GatorAg03

Not good. I'm not buying his story then. Does your wife have any ideas?

I hate to put ideas in your head, but could be some stalker for your wife, that saw her at the hospital. Does she ever drive the vehicle you were in? Maybe his plan was to wait for her to open the gate then follow. When he saw it was a man, he knew your first name from his stalking and acted like it was the wrong house.

I would give the sheriff a heads up and description. It's probably nothing, but you can never be too careful these days.

Could have been looking for a different jack that he had a description of. Looks up the name in directory, gets a few different addresses for multiple hits, goes looking for one that matches the description.

Could also be looking for an old army buddy or something that he has a name and city for, but that's it.

You said you had pictures. Post away and let texags take the lead on the investigation. Guarantee you'll know who he is, where he lives, his third grade teachers name and a full back ground check on the guy by close of business tomorrow.

That's natural. Nobody thinks the weird guy walking up to them to ask a question is going to rob/assault them, because you'd never make it through the day assuming that about every interaction with a stranger you had. Unfortunately, criminals know our natural reaction is to engage and be friendly with people who approach us, and tend to use that to close distance before attacking anyone.

It's part of why I think working on drawing from concealment under pressure is so very important for people who carry, because while 99.99% of our interactions with random people are completely benign, when/if you're ever actually attacked it is going to look a lot like every other interaction you've ever had with a weird stranger approaching you....right until it isn't.

Hope you figure out what the guys deal was, and not to beat a dead horse but....yes, you should be better about carrying every day. We don't get to pick when and where we might have a chance encounter with danger. If we could, we wouldn't need to carry at all, because we could just be somewhere else when we knew things were going to get bad.

It probably is someone looking for someone else with your name or a similar one. The guy he's looking for is another race, a lot older, a lot younger, different hair color, actually HAS hair (or doesn't, if you do), weighs a lot more/less than you do, etc. I do, however, think you should make some kind of report to the local police in case there is something sinister going on here. Go and ask to meet with a patrol sergeant and see what they say.

I would be worried and you did right by at least creating a record of incident with cops.

Its either a robber
A PI
A stalker
Or???

I would get some cameras if you dont have any

Him knowing your name is wild. Can't imagine he would throw A name out there and it would be yours.

Pistol and arlo cameras all over your property.

Man you guys are crazy. Let it go unless you see him again.

Jack sounds like a name you would make up on a whim. The guy probably thought he looked suspicious trying to make a u-turn with you starring at him and tried to make it casual. You threw him a curve ball when jack is actually your name and it made you even more suspicious.

Or maybe he'll be back...

Lessons learned here...

A) If someone asks for XXXXXXX don't be so quick to say 'Yeah I'm XXXXXXXX'. Kinda like when I suspect it's a telemarketer on the phone and they ask for me by name. I'll respond with 'May I ask who's calling' so I can confirm my suspicion and then hang the phone up. Looking back maybe a simple response like 'Can I help with something?' or 'And you are?' would've allowed you to get a bit more info on the guy.

B) Always carry

This could be true.

Jack, John, David, Bill all names we would use when crashing a random party in college.

Jack isn't my name and isn't the one he used. My name isn't super uncommon but not something you'd come up with on a whim. My neighbors know about it and the cops will this morning. Unless I see him or his vehicle again I'll just chalk it up to someone looking for someone else and pulling the wrong address

My guess is the guy has heard all his life about the house that jack built and then when he found Jack, he realized that it was nice, but wasn't all that.

And so he assumed he must have the wrong Jack.

Either that or he thought Jack from Jack in the Box lived there. Obviously he was mistaken.

Or a buddy told him that he didn't know Jack S*%& and he wanted to prove him wrong. Turns out, in fact, he didn't know him.

I think all of these are plausible explanations.

We don't have front plates here so I couldn't see it as he was backing down the driveway. And when I took pictures of him driving away the plate didn't turn out. My driveway is 150' long, so even going after him halfway down the driveway I was still a pretty good distance for my phone
