Going there for the first time Thurs 5/25 and will stay for almost a week. Youngest daughter will be coming down with the grand kids for a couple of nights with a trip to the beach in Port A on Saturday but the focus will be on fishing otherwise. Looking for any tips (baits, tackle, tactics) from those that have fished in and around this park. I would expect to fish primarily from the pier but what about wade fishing in and around the park? Do you need reef boots in that area? Also might want to break it up with a side trip or two to other nearby fishing spots. We will not have a boat so will be limited to piers, banks, wading, etc.

Walk out onto the pier early in the morning and walk down the steps to wade the east side of the pier. Hard sand bottom and occasional reefs. Use plastics for redfish and trout.

Night fish from the pier focusing on the channel and its edges. Usually, the later the better.

In the fall I've had success wading the shoreline that runs north and east of the boat ramp. That was several years ago. A quick check of Google Earth reveals that a community has been built nearby with a jetty system installed.

You can also fish nearby Copano pier. We used to do well there this time of year during the day fishing with mullet and perch.

A lot of wading you can get to right off the pier. Lots of oyster shells as well - wear some good foot protection!

The channel is under the 'hump' in the pier. Fish there.

For fishing from and near the bridge, any recs on line type? My reels are all loaded with mono or fluorocarbon.

That'll work. Most of your action night fishing will be 13-14.5" schoolie trout.

I fished over by the "Big Tree" back in February and managed to snag a few trout with DOA shrimp and a popping cork. I've heard this spot is really good but the weather wasn't too cooperative when I was there. I was fishing from a kayak so I was able to cover a bunch of water until I found the fish. I haven't fished the pier at Goose Island but also heard good things about that, especially fishing the lights at night from a kayak. I think the Copano pier was closed since the bridge was under construction but that might be back open by now.

Tides are super low right now. Keep an eye out for gators in Charles.

Cross reference different aerial maps. Find structure. Go fish.

We fished it last week and pulled in some good trout off the spoil islands near the big pier. They normally hold black drum.

Good luck.

For sure. Always liked fishing it as a younger man.
