Is this a photo shop?

I know there are no "black" mountain lions and when I pointed that out in a Facebook thread where our neighborhood stay at home moms are wigging out about a "sighting" in our hood, someone posted this pic.

ETA: Meant to put this above after my original question. Does someone know where to find the "un-shopped" version of this photo?

Holy hell! That's a terrible photoshop

Mountain Lions do not, I repeat, do not, contain the genes necessary to promote melanism (black coloration). It's almost genetically impossible.

For your Facebook friends:

Quote:

Cougars have been hunted for centuries and are one of the best-studied animals on the planet, yet there has never been a cougar documented displaying melanism. Melanism is a genetic variation that results in excess pigmentation turning the coat entirely black, and this variation just isn't part of a cougar's genetic make-up. So, you see, there has never been such thing as a black mountain lion.

When I was with TPWD, that photo went around at least once a year.....usually attributed to Kaufman County.

Here was the one she replied back with as "proof":

Cryptid hunter????? And those are all Jaguars

There is literally more proof that Bigfoot may exist than a black mountain lion.

I pointed that out and let's just say she wasn't happy with all of my replies.

"Well I guess I just made it all up in my little ole head! With all your Sulfur River knowledge I should have never commented back I guess! I apologize I must be mistaken on the subject!"
That was her comment back after I posted the photo shop proof and pointed out all of those other photos she had posted were jaguars. (and it was pissy and sarcastic.....not conceding)

Those "old wives tales" are hard to beat out of popular belief.
I edified my grandfather, my grandfather was convinced he had seen and heard a black panther scream.
No two ways about it, he was convinced.
I adored and edified my grandfather, but I SERIOUSLY doubt he saw/heard a black panther.
Many will never be convinced otherwise.

This is an old thread from Texas fishing forum and even when it's clear this was just a big, black, feral cat guys were adamant it was a black panther.

Things that people say that confirm or assure me they're a dumbass:

1. Black Mountain Lions Exist
2. Rattlesnakes don't rattle because of hogs
3. I'm a liberal

Black Panthers are FICTION, sorry

Your information is wrong. I spent 6 years studying predatory aminals in Texas and I assure you they are very real. This picture is not one, but they are real.

I'm a Texas History buff and the Black Panthers are native to Texas. Go to Vanzandt and Henderson County and you can hear them scream @ night. First time I heard one I thought it was a lady screaming for help. I never saw one but the old timers in the community (Edom) saw plenty of them in the day.

Black Panthers are not fiction. As a matter of fact look up Wheeler county in Texas. Back in the 80's the TPWD tagged and released serveral to see if they would survive and populate and now they want to know immediatly if you see one, kill one or trap one. I know first hand they exist my best friend is a game warden and he has removed some from traps that people have caught. Panthers are small just like house cats when they are youths just like lions and tigers, everything grows. You were not born fully grown where you?

Yeah, those are real high on the list of dumbest/funniest (though unintentionally so) posts.

I love all the "my granddaddy saw them down in a holler back in Cass County"

That's funny. I am good friends with the game warden that serves Wheeler County--I grew up with him--his dad was the game warden in Childress growing up. I Just shot him a screenshot of the quote via text. He laughed. Said he will take the lady snipe hunting next time she is in the panhandle.

Out of pure, borderline morbid, scientific curiosity, I'd love to see how long a big a-- black cat would survive in Wheeler County.

They're still at it today:

Quote:

An avid hunter at work today says he has seen two mountain lions (could be the same one on two different occasions) north of Longview. Swears that they had long tails and were not bobcats. Plus, there were some deer remains over on the far side of Lake 3 last year. Clearly not killed by a human hunter. It was a mess. Remember that? I doubt a bobcat couldn't take a deer could it? Perhaps? I'm just saying it's possible that there was infact a mountain lion.

Never mind that the location he's talking about is less than 100 yards from a highly traveled FM road, the carcus was laying out in the open, and had been there a while.

ursus,
Not to derail the black panther thread, but what are your thoughts on the Cougar Network, this map, and the confirmations?

http://www.cougarnet.org/confirmations/

Do you know how they confirm the sightings? Do their confirmations line up with what you know to be correct?

I would not trust that map. I know several of those newer ones, and can tell you they weren't confirmed by TPWD.

Black mountain lions tend to seek out lighter skinned prey and attack in gangs.
