Was killing the bass the other day in the lampro and noticed a boat load of bull frogs up and down the river bank. Thought i might go to gigging a few and fry those bad boys up. Turns out ive never done this. Sad i know, and i grew up on the river. Terrible. Not many of these suckers where i grew up.

dont know if any laws exist regarding this in Texas. Didnt find much official stuff online so i will make a call to the local TPWD. Just to be safe.

Anyhoo. Those who do this. Whats your go to tactic? Scored a gigg or two already. Just looking for a few pointers if your willing to share. Prob be doing this with a bud in a big fat belly canoe. Cant use a boat with a motor.

Thanks.

My tactic is to wade through the water an just grab them.

I just go to the gym and grab them from the mouth of a snake that's done all the work.

The process of spearing them sounds like fun. Cant really walk this river either. Sharp muddy banks in my location

Two options... go at night and spotlight them. They won't move until you basically touch them. (Always hunted them on private ponds don't know legality of this on public waterways). Or go around noon on a really sunny day. Sun partially blinds them.

We always hunted them at night with spot lights and gigs. Love some fried frog legs.

Frogs are a "Nongame Species" in Texas. Gig away. You need a hunting license unless hunting solely on private property.

Quick glance at the regs is a little confusing. It says when "collecting" with a hunting license you may possess no more than 25. That seems to indicate collecting = live capture. But there's no clear cross reference to whether there is a 25 frog limit on killing them... 25 is enough it'll take you awhile to clean them anyway. They're pretty delicious and a fun change of pace.

Headlight. One guy freezes the frog by zapping him in his eyes, while the other nails em with the gig on a long cane pole. Make sure run em through good or they jump off the gig. Careful not to get so focused on the frogs that you fail to notice the water mocassin that's right next to you. I prefer the 5 prong gigs as opposed to the 3 prong. We were usually in the water with waders.

Fish in the daytime, gig in the night time. Great summertime fun, even/especially on rainy nights in the spring and summertime. Had a blast doin this when we were in high school, and we'd have a frog/fish fry on Sunday afternoon for our parents.

You can catch bullfrogs with a top water lure. Cast it close to the frog, preferably where it will tangle in moss a bit, jiggle lure as if it is in distress. The frog will stalk the lure and ultimately try to eat it. Set the hook and reel him in. Did this quite often while bass fishing in stock tanks (ponds) in my younger years in central Texas (Coleman County).

I did this as a kid a lot. Problem is that the lure would get caught in the weeds on the bank, and I would pull too hard to get it loose. I hooked myself a couple of times, once through the cheek and once in the finger.

Use a fly rod and dangle a fly in front of them.

Best bet for this is a small curly tail grub with a small bait hook in it. Fish it on an ultralight spinning rig and you're golden. Caught hundreds this way as a kid (and more than a few as an adult).

I've always had better luck with Tenkara rods...

We'd spotlight them and hit them over the head with a boat oar.
