I hear you on wanting to use every day gear. If you use kydex IWB holsters I think it'll be no problem. I use a leather IWB for my 1911 and it just isn't easy to reholster over and over again at a match. I've done it once or twice, but much prefer using OWB kydex options...less for the draw and more for the ease of re-holstering.

I also need to lose some muffin top...that would make reholstering easier too.

Losing the muffin top makes everything easier. Except perhaps winning at see-saw. I suffer from the same problem.

I use a CrossBreed Supertuck for daily carry. It holsters easy enough. I've used it for some of the training classes I've taken without issue (although it's certainly not as easy or fast as an uncovered kydex IWB holster).

I haven't seen that issue with Glock mags either, but I also haven't spent any time shooting it below freezing.

I know the owner of this group. John is a great guy. I have talked to him numerous times about going out for an IDPA shoot and just never followed through with it. I really need to try one of these, my only fear is that once I do I'll be hooked and wanting to go all the time.

Definitely interested in going to shoot one of these matches. At the same time, would like to refresh a bit of my training outside of that.

Any defensive/practical shooting courses that people recommend? Not just pistol but AR/home defense also. Just want to refresh in a structured environment and I'm sure Texas has plenty. I travel for work quite a bit and would be open to suggestions in any of the 4 major metro areas of Texas.

I've taken Pistol 1, Pistol 2, Active Shooter, Active Shooter w/Trauma and Low Light / Home Defense at Combative Weapon Solutions in Bastrop and highly recommend them. It's good stuff. And you'll get to do some force on force exercises using sim rounds that will get your heart pumping (and will hurt a lot if you mess up).

They also offer rifle and shotgun classes, but so far I have only taken pistol classes.

I also took Beginner Combat Handgun and Intermediate Combat Handgun years ago at Strategic Weapons Academy of Texas about 20 miles south of Dallas (outside Ennis). Their classes have different names now. This was my first place for any formal training and it made me realize just how much I didn't know. That was probably 15 years ago, but I have no reason to think they're not still good.

Signed up for a defensive Pistol class today the second Saturday of February, so the match I was gonna try that same day will have to wait until March.

Not sure if you meant the class or the match. The class is at the Weapons academy I linked in my post above. After posting the link I looked at their schedule and noticed they have a class coming up in February. My dad and two brothers-in-law all Carry and live near Ennis so I convinced them we should all go do it together. I've been through seven all day classes so far so it shouldn't be anything new for me, but you can never practice the fundamentals too much.

If you meant my first match, I'll get back to you on that in March.

I'll be at the February Pistol 1/2 at Combative that you linked, Hoss. I live in DFW, but am in Austin for work those two weeks so it worked perfectly.

Sweet. Obviously I like their classes a lot because I keep going back. I hear they've improved Pistol 1 & 2 since i took them a couple of years ago, so I'd kinda like to take them again to see what changed.

its been a few years since ive been, but the guy who teaches that course (gordon) used to be a regular at the sportsman's outlet in atascocita. hes a multi time IDPA champ that would do walkthroughs and practice sessions once a week at the range.

So the pistol I plan on using is my 9mm XDs. It has 2 7 round mags and 1 8rd. My normal carry holster is a "sticky" but does anyone have recommendations for a holster I can pick up for not too much that meets match requirements.

I just don't want to spend a huge amount since I may change what I carry to a Sig 938.

No need to sign up for IDPA before your first match. Just tell them you're checking it out. If you like it and plan on continuing to shoot, then you can sign up with IDPA.

The XDs should work for IDPA, but if you continue to shoot matches you're going to want more magazines or a higher capacity gun...especially for USPSA.

Do the XD's still come with kydex holsters/mag holders in the case? That should work fine for the first match as you try things out...in general I like Comp Tac or Bladetech for holsters.

As an expecting father I certainly empathize with this. I'm wondering what kind of adjustments I'll have to make. There has to be a better solution though.

Right now I have a quick access safe mounted to my nightstand. I leave it open at night. seems like a bad idea with a toddler in the house. I do think I could get it open pretty quickly in the middle of the night.

As for during the day your best option may be to home carry when around the house. Keep it on you and under your control.

If you must keep it unchambered then practice practice practice chambering that thing.

My first match I walked everywhere, didn't try running once. Just wanted to focus on safety/muzzle awareness. Try USPSA next.

Did a few IDPA matches in 2016 for the first time. It was a blast and I'm hoping this year to do at least one a month once they start up again in March. I started doing them for the exact reasons this post was started. I wanted to be able to practice drawing then shooting, reloading on the fly, shooting on the move, as well as off hand and one handed shooting, all while under pressure. IDPA does this for me in an environment other than a static shooting range.

USPSA is great - but if you're new to competition, IDPA might be a better place to stick for awhile.

It will depend on your local clubs, but some use layouts which will be very challenging for folks who have not shot competitively for awhile.

(I've seen new Shooter's empty their Ammo belts trying to clear an occluded Texas Star.)

Steels is much easier than uspsa and 3gun.

Bring a pistol and several mags, shotgun, PCC, or 22 rifle.

What belt and mag holsters do yall run?

If you're new to action shooting games and not sure which game you're going to commit to playing, do not spend a lot of money on gear. Some stuff is not legal across multiple games.

Dry fire and draw with a dummy barrel. That will help most folks new to competitive shooting.
