an inexpensive AK47 or 74. And dont tell me those things arent accurate.
If I had to do it over again and knowing what I know now, I wiuld have gotten an AK before an AR.

Had a Mini 14 and loved it. Ate everything, very satisfying to shoot, work the action, etc. Wild at the range but the damn thing killed everything I've pointed it so it was accurate enough.

Most people go towards the AR because they are more accurate for the money and are tacticool. Accuracy Systems Inc will rework a Mini 14 or 30 to make them sub MOA and can change calibers as well. Just $$$$

If you decide to add one to the collection and opt for a used over new, I've got a couple of Ag buddies that are looking to unload theirs. They like the rifles but just don't have much of a desire to keep .223 in the safe anymore with the acquisition of other calibers they prefer. Both minimally used and in great shape. PM me your email address and I can out you in touch if interested.

Would you pay as much or more for an AK over an AR? That is the case today, freaking WASRs are $500 and up. No real "inexpensive" AKs out there these days

I have both, had the AK(Yugoslavian) before the ARs and much prefer the ARs. I bought my AK when they were cheap and ARs were expensive.

I've been contemplating an AK, but the stories of inaccuracy keep me from it.
I've heard the inaccuracy is more related to sights and sight radius. Is that the case which is resolved adding an optic?

Are you wanting it to shoot sub-MOA or just for plinking? Most AKs won't shoot sub-MOA but they'll shoot 1-3 MOA. They're plenty accurate to kill a man (see last 65 years of warfare) or a deer/hog in Texas. They're fun to shoot and ammo is cheap.

Most factory built AKs in the US are more accurate than the person pulling the trigger.

I would have no issue paying 1k for an arsenal or even more for a Krebs or Rifle Dynamics AK.
As far as the wasr and sub $700 rifles, i have seen several run in classes without issue. However, when you buy the lower end rifles, I would put my hands on the exact one i wanted to buy and make sure the action is smoothe and the sights are aligned.

Good to know.
Personally sub moa isn't really an important criteria for me in terms of hunting and defense. 1-3 MOA is about what my Mini does. My 6920 averages about 1.5-2"

Exactly! I have personally trained with a guy who took a wasr 10 with iron sights and was ringing steel (real size ipsc) at 400 yrds.

Love minis. On paper the AR is better but the mini is just so much more fun to shoot. I have a side folder made in the 80s. Everyone should own a mini.

same here. I've had one for a while, as soon as I got an AR, I don't think it's been shot since. You can get an AR for around the same price nowadays that will be more accurate and have more modular options.

Not trying to get into a mini vs AR argument because I think the guns serve very different purposes...but

My Colt 6920 weighs 6.9 lbs.
My Mini weighs 7 lbs.

Colt shoots about 1.5" to 2" groups.
Current model Mini shoots 3" groups.

Cabelas price on Colt 6920 is $999
Cabelas price on Mini 14 (with stainless) is $899

granted..there are much lighter and more accurate AR's, but there are also more accurate Mini's.
The AR may be more modular, but the mini has smoother lines and less protrusions to snag.

Inland Manufacturing $1,079 will get you an authentic reproduction.

That is not a reasonable price for a reproduction, IMO...

I agree, but you will not find a M1 Carbine at the price you want that does not have have burned/shot out barrels and worn out recoil spring, ejector spring and extractor spring. Also, they are notorious for feeding and extraction issues (even after replacing the springs) and typically do not like reloads. A beat up original M1 Carbine will cost you b/n $700 - $800. I would rather spend just a little more and have a quality reproduction that I can have fun shooting. JMHO

Here's one, just make sure he misses a little to the right.

My brother has mini 14 and he loves it. I like it too and prefer the looks to an AR platform. After that, the functionality suffers vs.AR. At least where we live. 70% of the varmints we shoot are shot after dark. Dillos, possums, skunks and pigs mostly. The ability to add/remove decent flashlight in a snap makes a great deal of difference in what you can see to shoot. I can say this with certainty... When he notices the pigs are beginning to root up near his house he comes for my AR to borrow.

Really hard to hold flashlight and shoot accurately, can be done, but not optimal. Also when you have had enough and you upgrade to NV it is important to have rails to utilize it. Also easy mounting for scope. You may feel confident shooting at dusk (forget nighttime) at 200 yds with irons, I prefer a scope. For these reasons I think there is no doubt in my mind that the AR is the better ranch rifle. They just aren't as pretty. And yes, I'd like to own mini 14. Just not sure I would use it much.

Mini's can have rails:

Cool! Did not know that! Still though... No magnified optics, limited to no NV capability, no place for IR illuminator and what appears to be capacity for smallish flashlight. Have that model light for my pistol it's insufficient for my needs here in some cases. But it certainly would work for shorter distances which is really kinda cool! Would work great for dillos tearing up my yard buy not for pigs at any distance, particularly in grass.
