Drove up through Lubbock to Clayton yesterday. Absolute worst decision in my life. Was terrified (more than usual) driving through Lubbock. Snow drifts in the roads in downtown Lubbock like skiing moguls. Piles of snow about a foot deep. Heavy wind, blowing snow. All the way through Amarillo. North of Amarillo, I27 was basically clear but still had driving snow and don't know what came afterwards. We hit Dumas about 10 pm.

87 from Dumas to Clayton was clear and made the trip without any problems. Got to Clayton about 11 pm NM time.

Left Clayton this morning. 87 to Raton clear. I25 up to Denver was clear too.

My younger brother went to Robert Keen's concert in Amarillo last night. Once he left the Amarillo city limits, he met one vehicle between Amarillo and Fritch, two in Fritch, and zero from Fritch to Gruver.

Three cars in eighty miles of driving.

My brother got in to Angel Fire about an hour ago. (They left Houston late this morning.). Clayton to Springer was clear. He said Cimarron Pass had a little snow but it didn't really slow them down. They didn't hit any ice.

Just a heads up that there's been a state trooper pulling people over for speeding on SR-58 between I-25 and Cimarron. He hides behind a hill a few miles in from I-25.

That trooper has been there for many years!

I've been stopped by that trooper more than once. Granted, I never got a ticket and half the time I think he just wanted to chitchat. I damn near got the cop in Cimarron killed, and because of the circumstances the trooper thought it was hilarious (hell I find it funny in hindsight, scared the crap out of me when it happened).

If we're talking about speed traps, Clayton, NM is on the list. The speed limit drops very low, very far out of town. And it is enforced.

And on a side note, if you see a maroon '94 Caprice parked in the employee area behind the Clayton, NM Love's, tip your hat to it. Served my family well for 200,000+ miles and a very nice young couple in Clayton now have possession.

Reminds me of coming into Brady from Mason on 87. Goes from 70 to 55 a pretty good ways from town. And the police are happy to remind you about it.

For the most part, I'm not sure it makes much difference in real life, but speed limits in New Mexico are fundamentally different from speed limits in Texas.

Speed limits in New Mexico are absolute. If you exceed the speed limit, you were speeding.

In Texas, that's not the case. If you are caught exceeding the speed limits in Texas, it is prima facie evidence that you are speeding. If you can convince the judge that your speed was reasonable and prudent, then you are not speeding. Not that many judges are open to that possibility, though -- as far as they seem to be concerned, speed limits in Texas are absolute.

I can't think of many better ways to ensure I have to pay the ticket than for me to try to argue/butcher the pronunciation of "prime facey" to a judge.

Other might have better luck.

Disagree. Everyone we know in Newer Mexico says they give a 10mph tolerance. Never seen more than 5mph in Texas.

So..I'm trying to get halfway to Austin tonight from Alamogordo. I don't really want to go through El Paso. Why? Because I want to I my drive half way and that means stopping in Ozona. I'd like to make it to San Angelo but the road around Seminole and Lamesa look bad! Ugh

With the new point system for licenses, a ticket for going under 10 percent of the posted limit won't cause points to be levied on your license. So, feasibly you could get pulled over for doing 76 in a 70 zone and ticketed, but it wouldn't "count." Of course, the officer could always say you were going faster.
