No leaves on peach tree yet?

I have a small 3-4 year old peach tree (can't recall the variety) in Houston and it hasn't formed any leaves yet. Lots of buds for a couple of months now.

Soil is reasonably moist. Tree looks healthy. What's going on? Cooler than normal spring delaying things?

Even though I got peaches from it last year, for the life f me, I don't recall when. It just seems really late to be getting into gear.

Thanks

Mine in Austin County has leafed and has a full crop. Did you have any frost or insect setbacks?

Not really. A nearby orange tree has black mold (aphids?) that I am trying to get under control. But it's not shown up on the peach tree so far.

We had a few light freezes this past winter, and I didn't even bother to cover. Maybe that was a mistake since it is still young, but I never covered it before. This spring has been pretty mild and I noticed the buds about the same time as the crepe myrtles were budding (March), since then I pretty much forgot about it.

Then today I looked at it and it sticks out like a sore thumb with everything else so green.

This is way late for a south-central Tx peach to not be in full leaf and fruit. Carefully scratch the bark, to see if it's green underneath.
Chances are it succumbed to one of the many enemies of peach trees (borers, canker, cotton root rot....).

I never cover ours. Check the mold closely. It could be melanose (was just in the Valley looking at an outbreak). Scales could be the cause though. I would treat with sulfur.

Check to see if live tissue under bark.

I have nothing to offer about your peach tree but the squirrels love mine. I hate squirrels right now.

Had the same problem with one of my trees this year in Magnolia.
Last week I took it out and replanted.

I think It's toast. All brown under the bark. Broke a small Limb off and it is as dry as can be.

Something must have gotten to it after it budded.

Dang.
