I imagine all gates on canyon lake will be opened to full within a few hours. Looks like gate 1 is already open and has been for a few days

Canyon doesn't have much in the way of gates. I think they really only have the 1 that goes through the power plant. Otherwise it'll have to backup and hold behind the emergency spillway.

They have two gates and gate 1 is only opened to half. Gate 2 is currently closed

I think they did some work to repair the emergency spillway issues. It is still quite a ways from getting close to that. Flood stage for the lake is 943 and it is at 909 right now. The 2002 crest was 950.

I'm supposed to go to Mason this weekend and clean stands out. My FIL can't get to Fredericksburg from Mason, and the guys that help out with the cows are South of the Llano and can't cross anywhere.

I might be at home this weekend instead.

I believe Medina Lake had the issues. The Canyon Lake spillway has only been used once and it created a gorge.

Probably a floating dock that he can move up or down the slope of the bank based on water level.

Nelson Wolff caused a stir by making claims he knew absolutely nothing about. The dam has never been overtopped in 100+ years and never will be. They did do some strengthening and repair work later on but the dam has never even been close to failing.

Correct

This morning when he left, it was on the lower trolly system and he hoped to get there in time to move it to the upper system, so it had plenty of room to rise.

However, now it appears the plan is to just try and keep it from floating down river.

That's all due to the Colorado being "pushed back up" towards Inks, ala 1998 flood, right? That put 4' of water or more in a lot of those homes all along the Colorado below Inks. Looks like a repeat, but worse, and longer lasting. Back then, the water was in and out in just a few hours, but this might last longer (more than a day?) than that one, since the Llano has yet to crest in Junction I believe(?)

Medina Lake
That gorge at Canyon was cutting back towards the backside of the dam, and it was worried at the time that it would destabilize the backside of the dam.

The crest of the emergency spillway is just a 1 ft wide concrete wall. I'm not sure how deep it goes into the rock. It's primary purpose is to create a smooth and level elevation that sets the height and location for the crest of hte spillway. During the flood though they had 10ft^3 blocks of limestone breaking free and moving down the channel.

So the concern wasn't so much the integrity of the man made dam. It was the idea that the emergency spillway channel could erode into the main body of the lake.

That's a little more water over the damn than I thought possible.

I'm looking at the Hunt Tx USGS markers and they are 2x above flood level at record cfs.

Between llano and mason on CR 304, half mile from the river and a mile or so from the castell turnoff.
About to see what kind of mess is out here and if cows are gone. They picked a good time to go on vacation.

The reports are canyon lake will be able to handle the water coming in. They are going to let water out at 5000cfs downstream which will keep it right at the banks edge by my experience

My heart breaks for you guys going through it. It isn't over yet, all that water is going to impact every community down stream. Flood waters are a very powerful and destructive thing. We've been dealing with this on the coast for 4 years. What I've learned is nothing is more important than the life of your family and friends. Stuff and livestock and money can be replaced. As you look at the forecast and think "please no more rain", I get it. I've been there more times than I can count since 2015. As bad as a drought sucks, watching things wither up and die, it pales in comparison of seeing everything swept away in a mater of minutes.
