Matagorda Bay salinity is 8 ppt ...

I'm assuming that's low,but exactly how low is that?

Your average typical pure saltwater is around 35 ppt. It can vary...but if your less than 30 or so you are talking brackish water.

No decisions could be made by man in 1998 as the extreme rainfall was all downstream from the dam. New Braunfels, Seguin, Gonzales and Cuero were at the mercy of the river and the river is merciless.

So this is what we are gonna be fishing in next week? Around 1.8 ppt salinity in Galveston bay? That can't be right.

We had a house on Back Bay by Biloxi for a few years. Had an epic toad floater like this that washed a bunch of gators down stream into the bay. I even caught a fair sized bass off the dock after that.

Forget the gar and catfish, break out your bass rigs.

In Laws live on the Guadalupe. He said in 98 they didn't get much rain that day. We were feeding cattle in one pasture on the bottom and he pointed up and told me that there was corn husk on those power lines.

Not sure where your in-laws live, but I live near the river east of New Braunfels and my 6" rain gauge overflowed before daylight on the morning of October 17, 1998.

Rough math - that's 3.1 million acre feet of water. Just over 600 square miles, average depth of 8 or so feet.

This was the case for Canyon Lake as well until the flood of '98. I remember watching live footage on the news as the water crested over the Spillway. Noone even knew if the spillway would perform as expected. It had never risen high enough/fast enough that the Canyon dam release into the Guadalupe River couldn't handle the water until that flood.

The flood which crested the dam spillway was in 2002. The 1998 flood was primarily a result of extreme rainfall on the Dry Comal Creek watershed, downstream from Canyon.
Yeppers...I actually came back to edit my post. Both events were huge floods. The Schertz area got over 20 inches in that one! Thank you sir.

I was home in Cuero that weekend and going back to College Station. I left a little earlier than I normally would have because we heard about the river rising and wanted to leave before anything got too high. But I don't remember any bad rain that morning or afternoon on the drive back. I don't think it got bad as far as the river until Monday morning in Cuero. I remember sitting in my dorm room and seeing the all the footage on The Weather Channel. My parents looked at a house that probably would have been flooded if they would have bought it when we moved there.

So is every lake full now? Seems like there were a few in West Texas and the Panhandle low still a few months ago.

Has there ever in the history of Texas been a time that all lakes were releasing?

Lake Ivie near Ballenger was at 14% or so last week. Lake Spence near Bronte/Robert Lee was around 10%. Lake Meredith north of Amarillo is around 26%. For various reasons, I can't see any of these 3 ever filling up. God help us if they do.
Spoke to my parents in Angelo over the weekend and they've gotten a bunch of rain this spring and May, but a lot of lakes are still sucking wind with Nasworthy being the outlier. Nasworthy is at 85%, Twin Buttes is 8.6% and OC Fisher is at 15.3%. They're supposed to get more rain this week...I just hope it falls on their watershed.

In his lifetime, my dad has seen those latter 2 lakes close to capacity and said they're quite a sight, hopefully one day I can see that too. Evidently the white bass fishing on TB is pretty great when there's some water in there.

I happened to be working on a project in Cuero that fall and winter. As I recall, everything south of the railroad tracks was either damaged or destroyed. It seemed like Cuero suffered more than most towns did downstream. In the Hocheim area, it seemed like the river was over 183 by several feet where the FM road cuts off to go to Cheapside.

2002 was not as bad in my mind because by July 1, it seemed pretty likely that the Canyon Lake spillway would be breached. The 1998 flood is the flood of record on the middle Guadalupe.

According to some conversion charts around 37,000 gallons per second.

Put it this way... 1cfs equates to about 2 acre ft per day. So 1 cfs is enough to cover 2 acres one ft deep.

5000 cfs is 10,000 acre feet per day. The Guadalupe River could bury Central Park in just under 13 ft of water in 24 hours.
MouthBQ98
How long do you want to ignore this user?

5000 cfs is quite abit. 2500 down from the dam usually makes it too nasty to fish.

5000 cfs on the arkansas river in royal gorge makes some of the classV into expert only type class VI, for example.

Brazos was over 133,000 cfs, and that is WAY low because they cant measure overbanks flow.

If I remember correctly, it takes a minimum of 150 cfs to be able to go tubing. At 300 cfs for the tubing is good. Above a 1000 cfs it starts to get a little hairy (and dangerous) for most people (especially in canoes if you aren't experienced). At 5000 cfs - stay away.....

You can tube the Frio on a lot less than 150. Iirc, median flow for this time of year is about 100 cfs

In laws live in Hoechheim. Their property is up river a couple hundred yards from the river bridge on 183.

They remember vividly that flood. Didn't loose any cattle. He was getting cattle off the bottoms in most of his pasture leases.

Velocity matters more than volumetric flow when talking about tubing, boating, etc.. Wide, deep rivers can have huge flow rates and be very calm. Narrow, shallow streams can get feisty at relatively low flow.

CFS = cubic feet per second = 448 gallons per minute = 2 foot acres per day
