Good rain forecasted in the area this weekend. Just in time for my annual Concan trip. Be interesting to see what the Frio's like this year. Last year (a week after the Memorial Day floods) it was a little...interesting.

It should be called matagorda lake right now...

I think 25-30 would be normal saltwater. Below 1 is freshwater.

Where was that measurement taken? I could buy salinity that low near Port Lavaca, but not out in the main bay where the water turns over quite a bit.

It's even lower in some areas - at the mouth of the bypass channel, it's sitting at 2ppt in West Matty. East Matagorda is significantly higher, which is not surprising since it doesn't have a direct discharge point like the western side does.

Marker 4, which is close to Palacious and Hotel Points, has a higher salinity. But it was down at 5 yesterday. Lots and lots of fresh water influent right now in almost all of the bay systems.

LCRA has some real time data loggers. Kind of a cool site for various info. You'll have to scroll to the bottom since they have everything backwards when it pulls up.

A lot of those LCRA data points are a month old. Also, the NOAA data is showing a lot higher salinity in the main bay. Either way, it appears upper coast fishing could suck for a while. Hopefully the wind will slow down soon so the surf will lay.

This was the case for Canyon Lake as well until the flood of '98. I remember watching live footage on the news as the water crested over the Spillway. Noone even knew if the spillway would perform as expected. It had never risen high enough/fast enough that the Canyon dam release into the Guadalupe River couldn't handle the water until that flood.

We're about to get hammered in Ft. Worth.

Medina Lake crested over it's spillway today after being only <10% full early last year. More rain moving in today and all week so it may get interesting around San Antonio.

Not sure about that, but I know in 1998, the hill country received more than 20 inches of rain in like 2 days. Water continued over the Canyon Lake Spillway for like 6 weeks after it started.

This was actually Apr 30th in Lindale...impressive forces at work!

so sad. easily avoidable death. educate your friends and family on A) don't drive thru water and B) if you do end up in deep water, roll your windows down and start swimming.

FYI, video shows street cam footage of car sinking at night with a flashlight moving around inside. How someone could think that they should stay in the car is just unbelievable.

Your average typical pure saltwater is around 35 ppt. It can vary...but if your less than 30 or so you are talking brackish water.

Is it getting sporty up there? How do you think it will be tomorrow? I'm supposed to be driving from Houston to OK for work.

Pattern is supposed to hold until Thursday with chances decreasing but still holding on Friday.

Lake Ivie near Ballenger was at 14% or so last week. Lake Spence near Bronte/Robert Lee was around 10%. Lake Meredith north of Amarillo is around 26%. For various reasons, I can't see any of these 3 ever filling up. God help us if they do.

Lake Ivie filled up the first year the lake was impounded and then stayed full for the next 10 years or so. I remember asking my dad if we could by a boat when Ivie filled up when the news said they were starting impounding water. Projections said it would take many years. He said yes thinking the same. Sure enough it filled up that year and he made good with a nice fishing boat. Man of his word.

The flood which crested the dam spillway was in 2002. The 1998 flood was primarily a result of extreme rainfall on the Dry Comal Creek watershed, downstream from Canyon.

Upstream it is. BRA opened a third gate on PK earlier today. Granbury is releasing 51,600 cfs as of 20 minutes ago as well.

I'm from Granbury originally and have been seeing videos and pictures of flooded streets and cars all over Facebook today. Looks like all y'all downstream aren't gonna catch much of a break, especially if stuff stays wet in Houston this week

Having a father and sister both work on projects for the state (both engineers) a lot was learned from those events. It was almost like a double edged sword when it came to decide on when and how much to release during those events. If I remember correctly. I just listened to stories during the cleanup a few years ago. Some of the things they found.

So this is what we are gonna be fishing in next week? Around 1.8 ppt salinity in Galveston bay? That can't be right.
