No, we had our hands full.
It was 1979, here is some info. I remembered a ton of rain but reading up again Alvin received 42" in 24 hours.

Yep, that is when the tracks running next to Mustang Road in Alvin were under water - and those things are about 8 feet higher than the roadbed is. Alvin got absolutely hammered.

I have lived in Brazoria for over 35 years and cant remember it over the road.
Sorry, not 2004, it was 2917 from 35 to 2004 back in the mid 80s after Claudette dumped about 2 feet of rain on that area.
1979. Lost all our cars and the bottom of our home on Clear Creek. Six feet of water n our house.

We live one street over from Cowart's Creek during the floods in 1979 and I remember canoeing past houses one street over with water up to their second floor windows. We were one of the few houses in the neighborhood that didnt flood and we dodged it by about 6". We were locked into the neighborhood for a few days. I remember seeing videos on the news of national guard trucks gettng washed off of the road trying to cross Clear Creek on 2351 to get into Friendswood.

I did, but as I told you in a text, I could use a little break now. Can't get my food plots in. Good news is IF I had gotten them in I would need to reseed them because they would all be dead.

A quick property tour from this morning. I head out to the deck to feed the dogs and sip coffee. Beautiful morning, everything is wet from last night's rain. It is peaceful like sitting on a deck in Colorado listening to a roaring river...

WAIT! It DOES SOUND LIKE A ROARING RIVER!?? Awwww sheet.

View of the side yard. The pond spillway can't keep up so it's now pouring out the side of the pond as well.


That leads to general moistness in my lower field.

It appears the creek has jumped it's banks as well and is flowing directly into my "pond." Which is now also full... which means water is flowing across my orchard.

I had juuuuust begun to let myself believe that some of this years tree/shrub plantings were maybe going to survive the first round of inundation. But now they are f***ed for shizzle.

The dogs seem to like that they now have their own personal waterpark though. Schlitterbahn can kiss my ass! No cover charge here!


But the lazy river seems, well, not so lazy, so we've closed that ride for maintenance at this point.

Believe me I have it all in perspective. And I can certainly deal with the prospect of a few hundred dollars in lost plantings to have our local water supply full again.

I have friends and distant family that have lost loved ones in recent weeks, so I understand what it could be. We're still at the point in most of Kansas where it's "wow, this is a lot of rain... but we really needed it."

For many the rain has stopped and the water have receded. Fishing trips are planned and things are getting back to normal. I wanted to share our recovery with the board, many of which followed our race against the river to save our cows.

The water has not completely receded, will take a few weeks.

Our hay for the coming year will be in tight supply. Jiggs are tough and well come back, but 3 foot of water for 7 days takes its toll.
Access roads have never been this clear.
Found someone's barn. Fences intact, long road to clear them.
Silt everywhere, even high ground. Gained 3 inches of top soil.
While we made it back there to the back 40, it will be a long time before the silt settles.
Tractor had some trouble.
Life in the bottoms. Floods bring pain, but rebirth all around. Bermuda grass is the champion of comebacks.
Moments of peace. Final count. Check. Culled what we needed, and got good prices. Just need to get this 70 head off of just 40 acres ASAP.

Thanks for the T&Ps for everyone affected by floods. Spot made it, and my wife stepped up to the plate and disproved every thought that a girl from Houston was out of place on the farm.

Dad always told us, "you can be afraid to lose something, and never have anything, or dare to make something of what you got, and risk losing it all." Hell we've had that place going on 120 years, it's worth the risk.

It gets increasingly tougher to make a decent living in agriculture, comparable to other industries (especially considering the capital investment necessary). But all things considered, it's a great life, and the ideal way to raise a family.

I remember some soil science field trips where we looked at silt deposits. Insanely thick, built up over many millennia of floods. Of course, with the dams upstream, these floods are more rare and less extreme.

Yep. Annual floods were nature's way of fertilizing the land. Thats why the plains and places like the Brazos river valley are the wonderful farmland they are.

But we have effectively damed every major river to stop those floods, for good and bad.
