Guys,

I'm thinking of putting in a misting system at my Bay House on Jamaica beach. I know they work fairly well (from friends' reviews) far inland, but I'm wondering if the winds and proximity to neighbors on JB would make a misting system less effective. Anyone with experience with one of these on the coast? Thoughts?

No experience on the coast, but absolutely love our system. One of the best decisions I made when we built a few years ago.

No experience with the coast either but I can vouch that they do work. My system runs both along the fence, underground and up the trees as well as just a couple of feet above ground in my planters. They do recommend that you don't spray on a windy day but even inland in Houston it gets windy and I never had a problem. Also, if it is timed to spray when winds are calmer in the mornings and evening that is recommended times to spray anyway.

Do they work with no-see-'ems?

Are yall's systems spraying a repellant, or is it a chemical that kills the mosquitos?

I used to be in the business.....on the controls side....I supplied the controls and logic to a major mfg.

I also installed several for my self and friends.

You want to spray an approved insecticide like Pyrethrum or a synthetic version.....not a repellent.

Wind is an issue but if you have a programmable unit...and you should........setting it to spray during dawn and dusk, and then overnight when the prevailing winds are more calm will help make it more effective.

Your efforts are to steadily reduce or eliminate the population in your area over a period of time and then maintain that control.

They work if installed properly, used continually, and maintained regularly....... Kinda like any other tool.

Don't expect great results if you turn it on when you get to the bay, mist it a few times before playing washers and then turn it off when you leave for the weekend.

The folks here in Sargent have poor results due to breeze
Before I would spend that much money the best approach is Bifenthrin 7.9% hose end or pump up sprayers spray entire yard , last for about 3 months no mosquitoes ,fire ants or termites
You can use cutter or permethrin same way just does not last more than a week.
I think you can get a pest control company to do it also.

Malathion is what the mosquito trucks use, and commonly used on the coast for mosquitoes. I am not sure how mosquito mist systems work in terms of maintenance and price, I would try a insecticide approach before going to that measure. Pyrethroids over time will create major resistance issues and spike populations of other pest insects because you are removing the flying predators.

2 tablespoons malathion per gallon of water. Treat your entire yard and focus on trees, shrubs, flowers, and problem areas. Keep some mixed up and respray after it rains. Will have good results.

Harmful to pets?

If you have any standing water, you might want to consider mosquito dunks as well. They contain Bti - bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (I can never write that without having to look up the spelling) which attacks the larva.

West Nile Virus and other diseases carried by mosquitos are no laughing matter.

Im actually starting up a mosquito spray business in the San Antonio area soon. Reagan1k pretty much summed it up. You would need to have it on auto spray and they need to be refilled every quarter. That being said they have programmable logic so you could have it spray a bit less when your not there then use the remote while your there to add some knock down.

The Pyrethrum is your best bet and is labeled safe on EPAs website. It breaks down very quickly unlike alot of other pesticides. The UV rays actually break it down around 5mins and its inert/ gone. Tt leaves no residual and is gone quite quickly once released into the air.

Mosquitoes aren't really migrating insects they are territorial/infestation, you just want to knock them out around your property.

Wind will be an issue, but if its an issue for you its an issue for the mosquitoes. Most styems spray @ 6am, then @ 9pm and 11pm when mosquitos are out and wind is usually calm. Most systems have a remote where you can add additional sprays if you are going to entertain etc.

chazman,

is/will your business going to include installing misting systems, or is it a service call thing?

If the former, I'd be interested in getting a bid from you for an installation. After that, I'd refill and maintain myself.

Pyrethums do take down most flying insects as well. Added BONUS!

We will be offering both.

An install with a maintenance contract or just a basic install and you can fill it with whatever you want.

I dont follow these boards too closely our website should be up within a few weeks.

I miss read your post Tx AG 88.

ITs for misting systems only. There will be an option with a maintenance monthly fee. Or we can install it and you can re-fill the system your self.

They make insecticides VIA amazon that you can do your self.

Some people even use natural oils if your into the all natural. They dont work as well but gives you that organic "good feeling".

I've seen the best results when using a hose end sprayer or pump up sprayer by spraying in the hottest part of the day. They will rest in the shade of the grass and shrubs so it is kinda like shooting fish in a barrel. When I do my yard, I also do the neighbors as well, with their permission of course.

The system we have has a hose real option as well. So you could spray any area you wanted as Dr shovelhead states.
