I'm thinking about joining a gun club that shoots at siloettes and uses different situations. A lot of the guys have 9's, some 40s and the occasional 45. I'm looking for a good 9. Looking for suggestions preferrably in a 9. Glock 17? What else?

H&K p30 for a hammer fired gun or vp9 for a striker fired.

If you aren't a fan of H&K, I would go to a Springfield XDM9 5.25"

There's Glock and then there's everything else. I've got some pretty nice pistols, but, my Glock 19 is my go to fun plinking gun.

If I plan to shoot heavily, 147 gr 9MM won't irritate my elbows, once 38 super has started to do so.

I really enjoy my 5.25 XDM - send it to PRP for a trigger job, and its a nifty gun.

Personally, for just plinking, I like revolvers - ideally an old, full size 22 S&W.

A old Dan Wesson can also be very nice, depending on the era

1911s can be, almost, as accurate.

It is hard to beat 9mm out of a Glock 34 or other 5" gun. The difference in barrel length may not be that big, but the longer sight radius will make you more accurate.

I have a 19, 17, and 34. The 34 is my go to for your stated purpose.

In addition to H&K and Glock, I'd look at the M&P9 Pro with the 5.25" barrel. The XDm is a piece of overpriced Eastern Euro crap with Springfield molded on the handle. I would avoid.

Can't go wrong with a 17 or 19. Lots of other good options too though (see posts above and below).

I love my Sig P226. Could shoot it all day at the range. Just feels right and I'm pretty accurate with it.

Depends on the rules they use, If they run a limited magazine like some competitions I would suggest the best ergonomics/trigger you can afford/like/fit you. STIs, M&P CORES, 226 X-Fives, Glock "practical" tactical line just to name a few there are many others.

If however they run it outlaw style or basically load as many as you can fit in the mag. This is were the extended mags really shine. But there are so many variations of games that flexibility will let you participate in more events.

Even with all that said, you do not need an expensive rig to get into the sport. The matches I have been to there are folks running an M&P shield, and they hold their own. And kind of hard to ignore the practicality of their practice with a carry pistol.

So a basic G17/G19 or M&P Series will do you and down the road only minor changes to them will make them even faster when your skills get to the point were it makes a difference.

Cz 75 or 85 should be in this discussion.

That being said, what kind of target shooting?

My new plinking pistol is a 4" Ruger GP100, with Wilson Combat spring kit. With 38spc, even my 11yo hits 2" groups at 15'.

Because I believe in rules.

I like my Ruger Security 6 using 38 special or S&W M&P 9C. Both are easy to shoot accurately, and I enjoy shooting both.

What kind of target shooting?

Ignore the G19 suggestions and anything that size.

If you're looking for a gun specifically to do target shooting with you want as long of a sight radius as possible. So if you're going Glock, it has to be a 34 or 35.

Different competitions have different rules, so it's hard to narrow down what would be good when we don't know the rules of the game you want to play.

But in general: Longer is better. 5" 1911, M&P CORE, XDM 5.25, G34, SP-01 Shadow, etc.

Favorite pistol for target shooting? Easy, Colt Woodsman

Favorite pistol to carry and therefore what I practice with for self defense? Easy. Glock 26

I agree. And I disagree.

I agree because if we're talking strictly target shooting then a long site radius is best, as well as lighter recoil.

I disagree because I think we're talking about IDPA types of competitions here. And if that's the case then it's my personal opinion that you'll gain the most from those competitions by using your carry weapon...even if said carry weapon isn't ideal for "target shooting".

Generally speaking though, competition shooting is going to make you a better shooter regardless of what gun you are using. Whether you pick a "target" gun to try and give yourself an edge in scoring or a self-defense style gun to try and give yourself an edge in a self defense scenario, you're still going to benefit either way. So I'd say pick the gun you like and go have fun with it.

We actually disagree less than you'd think: I shoot a G19 in USPSA and IDPA.

If the topic had been "recommend me a shooting sport to improve my self defense shooting skills", I wouldn't have steered him so heavily towards the competition guns.

Since he's looking for a target pistol, I recommended pistols that fit the bill...which doesn't include the G19 or similar guns.

But I agree with your post.

I don't understand the unnatural attraction to Glocks. My H&K does just fine and I'll never own a Glock.

I don't think the OP realized the specific meaning of "target" shooting in the title, the description in the body of the post sounds more like defensive shooting (IDPA type).

Never say never.

I like Glocks because they just work for me. Perhaps an H&K would too. I don't know because I've never shot one. But I got on the Glock bandwagon back in 2001 when I was looking for a concealed carry gun in .45 ACP. The Ruger P90 I owned was just too big and the Taurus PT145 I'd bought for that purpose flat out blew chunks. The reputation of Glock made me give them a try and when I bought my G30 I was hooked. The simplicity, reliability, easy maintenance and the fact that I shoot them really well all added up to a deep appreciation.

I've shot other semi-autos made by Taurus, S&W, Kimber, Springfield, KelTec, Ruger, Bersa and maybe a few others. Some of those I liked and some I didn't, but it's Glock I keep coming back to. Like I said, it just works for me. Kinda like H&K works for you.
