So I have an uncle who has been missing for nearly 30 years. He is my Dad's (Dad is class of '79) older brother, he left for California in about 1980ish. Family heard from him a handful of times and then it stopped, never been heard from since '82.

Well, I want to see if there is something I can do because it has always intrigued me.

Yes, my dad and other siblings have tried to find him but i would venture to say they gave up in 2005. At least that is the last time my dad says he put in ad in the papers in Cali. My dad's eldest brother hired a PI back in the mid '90s and found no activity on his SS#.

Anyway, does anyone know a good way to "find" someone, any PI's?

Like name, birthdate, and a picture.

I might not post the SS#, but rather share it judiciously over email with TA posters who have access to certain databases.

The technology and professional know how of the PI world has changed a lot since the 90's. your case is really cold and I would not know where to even begin; however, I'm a member of some professional forums where we trade interstate cases. If you want, I can put out a feeler to see if there is anyone who could help. There are PI's that specialize on missing persons. I'm not one of them but I guarantee I can put you in touch with some.

Maybe look on Facebook for kids with that last name in the area that he moved. My stepmother found her brothers long lost kid (they're from PasaGetDowndena) a couple years ago living in Huffman.

Or just post as him on the GB bragging about getting off of a DWI and the truck bought by his wife along with a document showing personal info.

would he be 65 yet? that's when most start collecting social security. Someone with knowhow could check that.

One supposes that he could have died, but was never identified at death. Maybe there is a registry or something in California.

Also possible is leaving the country. Any way to check on that if he left through the usual legal channels?

Googling his name in quotes only reveals two links:
1. this thread
2. an ancestry.com file (that I don't have access to) which is presumably his state birth record.

He essentially doesn't exist, name-wise, on the web (at least not with his middle name).

In 1995 a PI reported: no criminal history in cali, no voter registration, or DL. PI did report some misdemeanor chargers through '86 in Los Angeles, San Fran, and San Diego. Goes cold after '86

Held for observation at California State Hospital at Porterville, 1985. My family faxed info to all mental hospitals in 1995. Porterville said in phone convo and fax they had no record of him, other hospitals no record either.

**This is where i think it may help** Phone call in 1983 from a mother and daughter named Linda and Sandra Carson from a bar in LA, the number is no longer in service. They called me other uncle and said they knew JDR and didnt want to violate his confidence by providing much detail but he was staying with them. Uncle asked the ladies to describe him and he says they described him to his satisfaction. Never heard from them again.

And yes we have contacted missing persons.

I used to do skip tracing for a collections company. I hated the job but I was good at finding people. Don't have access to those systems anymore though. You could start with looking for legal filings, credit checks, etc.

Out of Homewood, California. To narrow anything down anymore see if someone can cross reference a database of Linda Carson and Sandra Carson to find any overlap. Search those areas and records for any John Rafferty. Maybe even throw Linda Rafferty in there to see if the result I showed you could be legit. Just a cursory Google Search shows tons of possibilities with those names.

Don't have access to the systems/databases to do the work for you but I would help if I did.
