I guess my question is...

why?

why do you want to find someone who doesn't want to be found?

Personally, I'd like to think if I ever want to just disappear, I can without having to be paranoid about a search party or a PI spying on me.

Has anyone stopped to think that the OP's story may be fabricated?

While not fool proof, the OP is an Aggie and an all star level poster. He's been around here for a long time if he's setting up some kind of shenanigan.

So I doubt it...

My ancestry.com buddy spent some time last night but came up with nothing. There were a few first/last name matches but no DOB matches and no middle name matches.

I posted the subject on a nationwide PI forum but it probably won't "go live" until Monday because the moderators review every new posting before its released to the group.

Not for lack of trying to get it going. I wish that one had panned out.

This one seems to have legs though, so we might see a happy ending.

Kind of agree with Rebel. Sometimes people just dont want to be found. Everytime I head down to Big Bend you run across people who just kind of "dropped out" years ago and wanted to fall off the grid. Maybe they are running from someone or something but I never really cared either way. Its their option.

This isn't about those who do not want to be found. It's about those who are left behind looking for a closure.

It doesn't mean the person left behind wants to reunite and start a new relationship but knowing what's become of the person who left can close the chapter. And move on.

I think it's also possible sometimes that neither party knows what to do as a next step.

Regarding the "leave em alone, they don't want to be found" crowd, for the searchers it's more often they just want to know that the person is ok and doesn't need any help/assistance. Or if they're dead, knowing that can be a burden lifted as well.

As the poster above said, it's more about closure than it is "hey buddy...lets hang out".

Given that he would be 64 years old now, that no one has heard from him since the early 1980s, and that he had mental illness--the most likely scenario is that he is dead. And discovering his death would likely bring closure to the family.

Much less likely that he is living his life under an assumed name.

Another possibility is that he may have left the mainland for a US territory, where historically a passport/visa was not required (e.g. Guam).

I had suggested to the OP that he include a picture. You never know who here might have run into him. Unlikely, but it's as good a chance as any at this point.

Most likely medical records from the 1980s have been destroyed. Long past the required number of years to keep the records. Even if they exist, would likely require a lawsuit to produce them (privacy laws).

Decided to look on Myspace, since it is a graveyard of forgotten profiles. Found a John Rafferty in Kingman, AZ, which is near the California border.

My guess, if still alive is he could be wondering around on the streets. Tons of people in Cali are just wandering around with mental illness.

I can't spell

I would have someone run a full criminal history on that name and DOB. If he is mentally ill then he may have been picked up by local law enforcement. Next, I'm thinking you would need to run a full credit report on him. Third, the LDS church runs a free genealogy website that has a ton of good stuff in it. Fourth, google TLO (as a previous poster indicated) and use that as a search tool. It is an extremely useful program full of different informational searches. Fifth, see if someone has access to an Internet database called "Workforce" or "Accurent." Workforce uses a persons SS# and will tell you where the person works. "Accurent" is excellent for finding new and past addresses for folks. Accurent and TLO are very similar. Sixth, I am thinking I would see if anyone has access to "Leads Online." This website is used to monitor pawn history and has some other really good search tools.

Sorry, I don't have time to edit this post right now. I will be watching this post if you have any questions.
