Amatuer Fisherman Here - I live in Fulshear and the lake behind our house has some very nice bass. Any lure or bait that hits the bottom is likely to get caught up in the heavy grass growing in this lake.

Can you help me out with a few recommended lures for fishing from shore? Should I just start out with a worm and weedless hook?

Any bits of advice are appreciated...

Horny Toad or similar with no weight. It can be fished slow, like a worm, or retrieved more like a spinner bait.

Helicopter lure or Banjo Minnow.

But really... Carolina Rig worm with a leader long enough to float the worm above the grass on the bottom. Killer for being dragged thru heavy grass like your describing.

this^ and weedless frogs/mice work great. If you plan on fishing often or catching a lot of fish, you may just want to fork over the money for a Spro. They are much more durable than the other brands although they cost about twice as much.

Even fished with a braid leader, nothing drug behind a carolina rig floats, even styrofoam would end up on the bottom unless you stopped your lure and waited a while (which most don't do when Carolina rigging).

You are dragging whatever is on your line almost direclty on the bottom...

To the OP...

Weightless plastics, heavy weighted t-rigs(more a technique from a boat), Carolina rigs (light/scattered grass), buzzbaits on edges, and crankbaits over submerged grass.

If the grass is close to the surface I would throw a scum frog or mice. I love seeing a solid bass launch out of the grass to slam a top water lure.

I would tie on a Senko with no weight. Senkos are naturally heavy, so they can be cast without weight.

If you want to add a little weight for cast-ability, insert a small headless nail somewhere that does not interfere with a hookset.

This will allow you to essentially fish the lure right over the top of the grass without getting fouled down in it.

Cast it out and let it sink, then work it back with jerk movements, jerk a little, wind, let it sink, jerk a little, wind, let it sink, etc...

Also, make sure you are using line that floats, like mono-filament. Although, over time, mono will absorb water and sink too.

also, aggiegolfer03 is right about c-rigs.

most soft plastics do not float.

people think they do and they imagine a c-rig with their weight on bottom and lure floating above the grass, but that is not what happens.
