Aside from the steering wheel and obvious windshield damage, I would have had to have the 15 or so square feet of upholstry surgically removed from my ass had that been me.

Is bet it came off a moving vehicle, either a drum in use (until it fell off anyways) or more likely, slid off a toolbox or off an open tailgate or something.

You're damn fortunate either way though.

That was my thought, Goose. Rarely have I seen a scrap metal trailer with a properly secured load.

I can't imagine someone running over that and kicking it up - probably bounced a time or two and hit you. Has happened to my brother before - truck going in the opposite direction lost a full wheel/tire and it bounced across the highway and into his truck.

I can still picture when I was a kid and a 2X4 fell off the truck in front of us and flew back into the windshield in front of me. Don't remember it coming through, back can clearly see it flying toward me. One of those permanently imprinted moments.

Thanks for all the well wishes....I have thought about what actually happened and it is a blur. I believe it fell off another vehicle but to be honest i cant be sure of that. I somewhat remember a object coming at me and then my window smashing into me. I dont remember it hitting the steering wheel at all. A friend of mine who posts on here came over to the house to pick up a cooler and as he put it...holy sheeeeet...the pics dont really do it justice when you see it in person. That drum weighs a good 15-20 lbs. The ironic thing about the whole situation was that i was actually going to carmax to see what they would give me for the truck. I bought a 95 bronco a few weeks ago and I kind of liked the idea of selling the dodge and getting out of a truck payment. Everyone be careful out there and be thankful for what you have. Things can change in a instant.

Two years ago I had a piece of angle iron about three feet long bust out my windshield right in front of my face as i was driving on 610 loop in Houston. I know exactly how you feel. It was surreal. Glad you're ok and have a drink for me.

Just talked to him, he is still in shock. He is a VERY lucky guy, 3" higher and bye bye. Don't worry, I think he may have a drink for each of us. Hang in there big guy.

It's funny you posted this because I had an object come at my windshield the other day (not sure of the object) but I did some lame ducking maneuver, and after it bounced harmlessly off my windshield I thought, "If that thing had some mass to it...I'd be dead."

that happened to my Dad, except it was the entire wheel.

Did you report that as a crash to whatever city or DPS, as it should be workable. I helped with a crash on a similar incident a while back and the guy was not so lucky. Glad you are ok.

What was the nearest exit on 35? Near Huguley Hospital or Mrs. Bairds / Miller Brewery?

OMG dude. God must have some plans for your, that is simply too close, even a deflection off of your steering wheel would have really really hurt you. Im trying to pick my jaw off the floor. Its amazing how quickly life can be taken away by other people's negligence.

Winshield is being replaced tomorrow morning and then taking it to the body shop tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully it wont be in there for too many days.

I know a few Ft. Worth Police Officers, just sent this to one of them. No comment back yet.

I pulled into a gas station at the next exit and there was a police officer there getting gas. He gave me a non injury form to fill out if i wanted too but said there wasnt much he could do except look in disbelief at it. Said he had never seen anything like it before.

I once had a piece of pipe bounce it's way off of a scrap trailer in front of me in Oregon ... it bounced end for end one, twice, and then went under my car... destroyed the underside of the front bumper in the process, but I felt pretty fortunate that it didn't hit metal or do any real damage.

If they are implying a truck/tractor, it's not. That is an automotive drum. A truck's brake drum would have stopped in the bed of the OP's pickup.

I was just having a conversation this morning about this very topic with my brother this morning; unrelated to this thread.
