I'm on the market for a small to medium sized trailer pit (24"x48/60" range). I've done my internet homework and narrowed it down to Gator, JJ and Klose; Each has glowing reviews. Any comments from you guys on pros/cons between the three?

*Sorry if this topic has been covered ad nauseam. The FAQ didn't discuss JJ or Klose too much.

I have a gator. I'd buy it again in a second...

That's not thin-blue smoke. Good looking pit; better looking grub.

My uncle bought a used Klose pit this past year. The pit hadn't been used in years and was in pretty bad shape. He took it to Klose who refurbished and tuned it. My uncle got a virtually brand new, 15-20k pit for $7500 total. After cooking on that pit, I'll never own another brand.

Not to derail thread:

I've been smoking on an electric smoker for a year now and have been impressed. I've tossed around the idea of moving up to a wood-fired smoker instead. The electric smoker is so dang easy to keep at the same temp...on a regular smoker, how do you maintain a constant temperature? Do you trust it to leave by itself unattended overnight?

I have to stoke the fire every 2 hours or so. Pretty sure that unless you have a BGE, you cannot leave a smoker unattended all night.

It depends on the quality of the pit. That is the great thing about the Klose. It takes an hr to get it to temperature, you can then add 1 log every 1-2 hrs, keep the lid closed and you have no worries.

Got this custom built for about half of what one of those would have cost. It may not be as fancy, but it sure does cook good. 3/8" steel all around with 1/2" at the firebox. Took 3 guys to move that dang thing.

You can with a pellet smoker.

I looked at Gator and JJ last summer when I was looking at pits. I ultimately went with LyfeTyme. As I recall there were a couple of things about their pits that I thought were more form over function. Ultimately I think I got a lot more pit for my money in Uvalde.

OK, I should get some credit for having not starting a new thread on this very discussed topic .

I am about to have somebody build me a stick burner for some country property. I will put it on a single pipe secured into the ground. I don't intend to move it and I like the ability to rotate it depending on the wind. I will look at Klose, Pitts and Spitts and Gator Pit.

So is there a TexAgs thread that anybody has seen that they can post here so that I can read up on these options before I purchase one?

I looked at all of them and had Gator build me one. Would choose Gator again, no question.

I smoke on a Klose fairly regularly. It has a vertical and horizontal smoker. I do not like having the vertical smoker as I think it messes with the draft too much and I never use it. It's honestly too much smoker for a family BBQ. Takes a lot of wood to heat up.

The fire box door is a pain to shut because I think I got it too hot and bent the latch. Other than that, it's a good rig, just major upkeep for a big smoker.

I haven't used the other brands you mentioned so I can't compare.

I've got the 2448 Gator and I love it. Heard great things about those other brands too. I had to wait 18 months for mine to be built, so I'd say go with whoever can get it to you quickest.

I bought a JJ pit similar to this back in 2010. It has been a great investment. I will say looking at the website, they have upgraded the welding on the trailers.

Pit Man, I started this thread more than nine years ago. If I had known you back then, i would have given your pits a look.

In the end, I wound up with a kick ass rig from Pitmaker. I won some hardware with it and would highly recommend Pitmaker to anyone looking for a serious comp. rig. I don't compete anymore so I sold it a couple years back..at a profit!
