I can't believe no one has said anything about Red Wing Boots!I don't think they are really roppers though...

I bought a pair about 8 years ago and they have been great. About 2-3 times a year I will oil them and they will look like new boots.

I feel like $150 on a pair of boots that have lasted me for 8 years is damn good. Oh and I wear these everyday and they go well with just about anything

I believe I have the Pecos 1105 dark brown

i just got my first pair of boots in may. i ended up going with double h because i liked the way they looked and some of their boots have what they call a pillow cushion sole in the boots that make them really comfortable. i can't say too much for how long they last, but i have a buddy who's worn his to work everyday for the last two years and they are in great shape as far as duarbility. like everyone says its a preference. i ended up going to several cavenders until i found the brand and size that fit and then had to order them because i have a wide foot and the selection is considerably less.

Would you rather they be made in Mexico or another foreign country?

If the boots are not made in the USA, then yes, I would like boots that are made in Mexico. They know how to make boots and other leather goods in Mexico just as well as those made in the USA.

As for boots made in China, sorry, I just don't care for it. It's not a quality issue, just a personal preference. Sure I have clothes, electronics, and Christmas ornaments made there, but I draw the line at boots. To me, there's something wrong about having one of the objects most associated with Texas manufactured in China.

Dude... here's the cut and dry. GO TRY SOME ON. Find out what you like, in heel, tops, width, etc...

If you can, go to a smaller boot shop (i.e. not Cavendar's or Shepler's) and you might avoid the HS kid who don't know ****. I have been wearing boots all my life. Right now, I own the following:

Justin Techno Crepe Roper - 5 years old, wear at ranch.
Justin Techno Crepe Wellington (round toe, actual boot pulls ("eyes" at the top) - brand new (less than one month.) Bought to replace Ariat.
2 pair Luchese 2000 Full Quill Ostrich Ropers with crepe sole - 6 months old
Ariat Horseman - 2 years old, has hole where stitching separated from sole... heading to trash heap
Tony Lama "Western" Boots - 10 years old... wear 1-2 times/year
Twisted X Ropers - 2 years old

Why did I buy each pair? Cause I like the way the felt on my feet. I have a high instep and EE width foot, so I buy on comfort/availability when I can.

My first two choices, all things considered, are Luchese and Justin (in the machine made category.)

I will get a pair or Rios or Littles before I die.

Do what is comfortable for your feet!

I took yall's advice and went to Cavendars. I found two pair I like. One was a Justin Roper, the other a Larry Mahan. No one has mentioned Larry Mahan, but they seem to be made in Texas. Anyone have any experience with these?

why do you find it hard to believe that nobody's suggested a pair of work boots to someone looking for dress boots?

here are a pair that i've been wearing pretty regular lately. not dressy enough for a suit, but look good with khakis.

Go get you a pair of chocolate smooth ostrich boots and you should be good. Don't go with the square toe, it just plain looks bad. Anyone who disagrees with that can kiss my butt right in the crack.

Larry Mahans are good, I've had a pair for over 2 years now that I wear daily and are still in good condition. I agree on the square toes, Jason, I don't know who thought that looked good, but they were wrong.

+1

I wear my 1105s every single day. Had them 7 yrs and have not been re-soled yet. Sure, they are not for a suit, but I don't wear suits or dress pants, or khakis for that matter. Yep, even wear them to Church....or in the woods....to work....to the gun range....my daughter's gymnastics....you name it. I realize that this doesn't help much, but I've got to spread the love for Red Wings. I think they would go Ok with some khaki Wrangler pants.
Good luck.

I bet I wear Redwings 250+ days out of the year.

Red wings suck for about 2 weeks, then they are amazing. I could wear mine all day on the jobsite and my feet didn't bother me.

Whatever you do don't cheap out on boots, spend at least $125-150 or else your feet will hate you.

Hey guys... the OP asked about wearing with a suit/slacks and jeans... not about wearing daily, on the job or hunting.

Red Wings are great boots, and I wore them when I worked construction... but they won't go with a suit.

My dad, brother, and I have fallen in love with Rod Patricks. They look great and can wear them all day long. They are hard to find but great boots.

I'm getting a pair of western boots for Christmas so this thread is really timely.

Any recommendations for shops in the San Antonio area? I know the big shops, Cavenders, Sheplers.

Gil's Boots on US 87 South. They know what they are doing and they aren't the big boys.

Also, Harris Western Center in Lytle.

...on this front, does anyone know whether Kimmel's in Comanche is still running strong?

They used to make some hellacious boots.

on the red wings, right when you get them, get a pot or super boiling water and pour it inside each boot......let the water seep out and let the boots sit in the sun until dry. Then hit them up with your regular boot oil (10W30). They'll be so soft but still tough you won't believe it. I was told the hot water breaks down the leather somehow. I've done this with three pair and it works really well. Learned it in the oilfield back in the day.

Sean, they're still in operation. I'm wearing a pair of their boots right now. Gonna have to get Eddie to flatten out the arch in my right boot. It's killing my feet. I'll post up a picture of them here in a second.

The boots are very well made, but they didn't fit from the get go. I sent them back a handful of times to get stretched but it wasn't ever enough. I could wear them with very thin dress socks so I tried to just break them in normally. Recently I took a trip back out there and had Eddie remeasure my foot. He added onto the last and stretched them again for a few weeks. Now I can comfortably wear them with normal cotton socks. The only odd thing is the right boot now seems to have a higher arch. I suspect this is due to him repairing the heel, but I'm not 100% certain. I'm going to try and get out there next week and get him to knock it down a little for me. It bruises the arch of my foot and can be very uncomfortable to wear.

By far, my favorite boots are Anderson Bean. The look good, feel good, and are made in Texas. They're not the same old boot that you see everyone else wearing either. The hold up great and have an awesome square toe that is very comfortable.

I've tried on some Anderson Beans and the arch was too tall for me. My sister wears them and likes them. They're also priced very fair.
