Changing from Apple Maps to Google Maps on iPhone text link

How long do you want to ignore this user?

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but I can't figure it out based on the instructions listed I found online. I guess I'm not understanding where they're trying to get me to start.

Today, I was supposed to meet up with someone for a FB marketplace sale. He sent an address via text that I clicked on and it came up in Apple Maps at a certain location. I never use Apple Maps, but I was like, OK, whatever and went there. Long story, it was the WRONG location. By about 3 miles! I entered the address into google maps and it would have taken me to the right location. After we both figured this out, we got the deal done so little harm, but I don't want to take a chance of that happening again and I send and receive addresses all the time.

So, is this a default app change? Something else? Google directions seem to suggest from INSIDE google maps but I couldn't find where in settings. Nor could I find it in iPhone settings.

Help would be appreciated.

My understanding is you can't do this. You need to just hold and copy the address and paste into Google Maps. If you go into google maps the only default apps you can edit or the browser and mail.

If you never use Apple Maps have you tried deleting the app and seeing what happens?

I haven't considered deleting it. I might try that on my home iPad and see what happens. The irony of all this is that, due to some frustration recently with GMaps, I was considering switching to AMaps at least for a while.

Obviously, not now.

It's a link to Apple Maps with the GPS coordinates embedded. Deleting Apple Maps will likely prompt you to install Apple Maps to get the link to work.

I'm curious if it was the app or the link here though, I wonder if the link sent was actually incorrect. If you type the address he gave into Apple Maps what happens?

FWIW I use Apple Maps all the time with Carplay and never have any issues.

Waze for driving directions. Great for seeing cops, traffic, etc.

Google for nearly anything else. I will search, find what I'm looking for, add stops, map out a route and then copy and paste anything needed into Waze. Not sure why it can't integrate what Waze does, considering google owns Waze. Maybe I just haven't toyed with settings enough.

I try to never use Apple Maps as I've been burned multiple times. Missed half of a daughter's soccer game and the final straw was late to a client meeting. It has improved over the years, and I like the integrations with watch, and notifying people with phones, etc, but it's just so crappy I can't use it.

Same. It integrates with my truck better than any other option (shows in my center console, etc.) so I wish it were better.

Sometimes places are just off. Not sure why.

Also, directions aren't as good. For example, in houston coming on the north loop going west, it's a bit of a cf (have two lanes exiting for 290, 2 lanes exiting for 10, one lane exiting for a side street, and 2 lanes staying on 610). Waze and google tell you which lane to be in. Was in an uber using Apple Maps a couple weeks ago and just says continue straight. He was in a right lane and had no idea he needed to get over 2 lanes.

I also don't find the traffic suggestions as good as Waze and google.

From the OP:

Like stated above, I cut and pasted it into GMaps. It never dawned on me until the other day that Apple Maps could be that far off. It just seems like it said, "oh, there's 2 Exxons, I'll just pick the one 3 miles away."

Right, and you never said if you entered an address that was sent to you or that you got it from the link/map, hence the question.

I guess I'm the only one that hasn't had any issues with Apple Maps since they redesigned it a few years ago. Takes me to where I need to be and is pretty accurate with the time. I use it all of the time navigating around Houston and on family trips to places like Florida, and to the family farm in Iowa where Google street view isn't even available, and no misroutes or issues. Yeah, it won't send me down an alley to save 0:28 seconds like Waze will, but I think I'll get by.

My buddy and I went to the Auburn game last month and I hooked my phone up to Car Play since he doesn't like to use Android Auto, and he did nothing but complain about AM while using it and saying how GM is superior. Things he was complaining about were so nit picky that I just had to laugh, with the biggest being that our location wasn't exact like in GM. The example was when we were at a stop light and it had us just before the intersection rather than right at it. Ok, so it's GPS location is off by like 2 feet. To him, the dot not being at our EXACT location confused him on where to turn. Maybe it's just me, but I glance at the dot and rely more on the distance to my next turn. If it says I'm 200 feet from the turn, I look at the map and see that's 2 streets up, so I know not to turn at the next street. To him, it was everything.

After getting tired of the complaining, I told him to hook his phone up to Android Auto so he could use GM, so he did it and just gushed about how much better it was than AM. He would point things out and I'd just laugh and tell him that AM showed the same thing. I concluded that he was just so used to the look and feel of GM that nothing would be good enough, and I bet that's probably reality for many.

The routes we took were the exact same and no deviation. The one thing I've learned about AM over the years is that it will not change a route unless it will save you more than 10 minutes. If sitting in traffic will only delay you for 7 minutes, it'll keep you on the route vs send you around traffic on some side streets. Not that big of a deal for me.

One place where GM is superior is it's traffic. That's the only reason I still have it. I pull it up before going somewhere to see where it's red and yellow, and try to avoid those areas. If using AM, I choose the route option that avoids that particular part of the route.
