Was thinking of getting the family a Wii, but realize that is old technology. What's the best console that would allow the family to play, i.e. up to 4 players, interactive, competitive, etc.

The switch will do what you want
Do not get the Lite, get the full blown Switch with removable joy-cons and ability to hook to HD TV. ~$300
Buy a Switch plus an extra set of 2 joy-cons (~$80) (choose different colors to separate) and maybe an extra joy-con charging grip (~$30).
That will give you 4 small controllers and 2 full size controllers.

I think the best Wii alternative is the Wii's successor - Nintendo Switch.

As for 4 player games - you'll do no better than Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
