You get tired of answering these, just let me know. I have tons more questions and I really appreciate your answers.

Next question(ish) - I do not get investigations. Selected one to hunt a great jagtas. Killed great jagras. Investigation is still there.

I never get tired of answering questions about my favorite game series of all time!

Investigations are repeatable, there will be a number on the right side of the list next to the investigation showing how many times that investigation can be completed. The reason you want to do investigations is that they give bonus rewards. You'll see at the bottom of the description of the investigation a number of colored reward spaces, either bronze, silver, or gold. Those have varying chances of giving you rare materials. Whenever you are grinding for materials to make armor or weapons, you always want to do investigations instead of optional quests because they will give more and better rewards.

Investigations also give higher money rewards and usually come with different restrictions. You might be limited to 2 players instead of 4, you might only be able to cart once instead of 3 times, it might have a 15 minute timer instead of 50, etc.

Also, how do vouchers work?
There are 2 types of vouchers. Lucky Vouchers you get as your daily login bonus. You have the option to use one whenever you sign up for a quest and they will double the money reward you get at completion.

The other kind, just plain Vouchers, are used at the canteen and will make all the ingredients in a meal fresh (green shimmer around the icon). Fresh ingredients increase the amount of health bonus you get from the meal. Thats why when you look at the different meal options some will say Health +30 or +20 and some might not have any bonus at all. I believe they also increase the chance of activating the felyne skills you can get from eating (those are listed at the bottom of the meal menu).

What weapon ya'all using? Usually I pick up long sword but that seems to be everyone's pick in this game. Been trying to learn the hammer, bow, and heavy bow gun.

After a solid 35 hours, finally got into high rank.

The game really opens up then! Any resources out there for basically what all the gems, decorations, and other things that you could either ignore or weren't present in low rank are meant for and how to get the most out of them?

https://mhworld.kiranico.com is the go-to MH database. It's still being updated, usually we don't get the game until like a year after Japan does so the data has already been mined. Since they did a simultaneous release this time everyone is still working it all out.

Tried to take out Nergigante last night and that did not go well for me. He's absolutely brutal. Anyone else fight this ******* yet?

Having said that, here's a video of someone killing him in less than a minute.

~70ish hours in, still HR 13 or maybe just bumped up to 14. Finally took out Nergigante this weekend. I think I've got him figured out now but man, he is just so powerful at this gear level that any mistakes are absolutely punishing. I was able to kill him several times but even then I got triple carted once in between 2 other successful runs.

So now I'm trying to farm him for weapons before I try to take on the other elder dragons. Need 2 tails for both the hammer and greatsword, and I have 0. Only place to get them is from a tail carve AFAIK, so I forsee many runs in my future

I have a friend who's HR 74. I asked about how he leveled so quick. Of course he's been playing this series since it's inception on the old playstation. But he said focus on the Optional quests. Pretty generic I know but that's what he said. I'll keep fishing for info.

So I got my hands on a spreadsheet that has all of the weapon, armor, slots, defense, charm and decoration info, bonus skills...you name it. I'll list the skills just so it's on record here. For the rest you'll need to ask cause it's a lot of data.

Okay guys sell me on this game. I hear nothing but great things about it, but I tried starting it and it felt.. slow?

Help me out. I want to like it because everyone else is playing it, but I don't want to invest 40 hours to finally get to the point to liking it.

Do you find the combat itself slow? If so, try different weapons.

It felt clunky to me at first too. But then I realized it's not a hack and slash. It's a skill game. Once you learn the mechanics, your mind will catch up to "speed" of the game. You almost have to untrain yourself off of the other games you've been playing. I haven't been this addicted to a game in a very long time though. You get so much game for your $60.

If this is your first Monster Hunter, you will have a pretty steep learning curve to climb. For me, it took about 10 hours or so for the game to finally "click."

First, you will need to speed date all of the weapons. Narrow it down to a few that feel good to use to you.

From there, you will need to try those few out in a little more detail. I'd stay away from anything that is too complicated or too slow. Dual Blades are the fastest, but there are others as well.

The combat is deliberately slow. Its is MUCH more about skill, positioning, and timing more so than quick reflexes (ie, no blooborne or even the other Souls games).

Don't use the lock on camera. Learn to move it manually. More than likely (depending on your weapon), you will sheathe it alot. (Turn off Auto Sheath). You actually have to aim your swings by positioning your character. You can't just turn on a dime and hit the attack button.

Also, don't fight monsters. Hunt them. If you just fun up to them and start swinging, dodging, swinging, dodging (like you would in most other boss fights), you will be in for a bad time. Take your time. You have 50 minutes. And until you get up into the higher ranks, this will be plenty of time to settle in to how the flow of hunts work.

The flow of it is really what's key. Once you get good. You will know 30 seconds or a minute before you are hit that you are in a bad position and you will get carted.

This is also my first Monster Hunter. I pre-ordered it with an Amazon gift card I got for Christmas just because I hadn't played my PS4 in a long time. When I played it that first day I wasn't exactly enthralled off the bat. It wasn't until I decided to try it again that I got hooked. Now I am 100+ hrs in and totally addicted.

In addition to what everyone else has said, I'll add this youtube video which does a really great job of explaining why the game's animation causes it to feel slow to you, why that is a conscious decision, and why it's an important aspect of the game's combat.

Like others have said, if you can retrain yourself to fight the way the game wants you to, the combat is really rewarding.

Poison and flash pods. Poison keeps him taking damage when you can't reach him and I'm pretty sure he stays stunned extra long from flash pods. I havent fought him yet, but that was always the case in previous games.

I knocked out Vaal pretty easily, currently getting used and abused by teostra.

Red Five

If you can get him to the point that he retreats to his lair, you can cheese him by setting two Mega Barrel Bombs (large barrel bomb + devil's blight) then set a small barrel bomb to set them off and run out of the area. The bombs will go off for a good chunk of damage and wake him up, and he will then go back to sleep since no one is around. You can fast travel to the camp to get more bombs and repeat. Annoying to do, but almost all of my failures against Nerg were due to getting obliterated in the tight spaces of that area, so it's certainly an option if you are also having trouble there.
AGSPORTSFAN07

So we finally beat him last night. We used your suggestion Red Five and we placed 8 Large Barrel Bombs. That got him pretty good. He's fierce though and I don't look forward to doing it again to get my Dragon King helm and Fitness Charm III. But I'm doing it. While I'm doing that I'm going to work on that weird Diablos Bow build that's supposed to do 100% crit on first pull. I have some research to do.
